Where to stay in Dublin: beside Trinity College or in Temple Bar?

A quieter Georgian townhouse and a hotel by the Liffey put central Dublin within reach, with different evening atmospheres.

Maskay editorial team Updated

The first accommodation decision in Dublin is often how much noise and activity you want outside the door. Trinity College, Grafton Street and St Stephen’s Green form a walkable axis of culture and shopping; across College Green, Temple Bar gathers cobbled lanes, pubs and nightlife venues beside the Liffey. They are close, but returning to a small Georgian townhouse feels different from walking back to a hotel within the pub district. These two addresses let visitors compare a residential-style centre with Temple Bar’s energy without leaving the area many visitors explore on foot.

Trinity Townhouse Hotel is less than 100 metres from the campus, in a Georgian townhouse with 31 rooms and breakfast served in the Library Street Dining Room. Its smaller format and dining room make it a boutique-style stay. The Fleet Hotel occupies two protected buildings on Fleet Street, opposite Trinity and about 100 metres from the river; it has Café Bar 1920, a terrace, several room categories and a nearby DART station. The address was once home to Bewley’s Café, opened in 1905, an urban-history layer now set alongside Temple Bar’s activity.

For an early visit to Trinity, the Book of Kells exhibition and a walk along Grafton Street, Trinity Townhouse shortens daily journeys and keeps guests away from the busiest lanes. For combining sightseeing with dinner or a drink in the hotel, The Fleet makes logistics easy from Fleet Street and has bus, Luas and DART connections nearby. Both allow visitors to walk to Dublin Castle and Christ Church Cathedral. If early nights are important, ask about room outlook and floor, especially at The Fleet, where a central address does not remove the district’s late-night pulse.

Trinity Townhouse visitors value the location, breakfast and staff, although rooms vary and some comments mention noise. At The Fleet, the location, team and shared spaces are appreciated; nearby nightlife is a factor to keep in mind. The listings consulted showed 4.4/5 from 285 reviews for Trinity Townhouse and 4.3/5 from 1,330 for The Fleet. We could not confirm an official star category for the first; The Fleet is listed as four-star. For a more tucked-away stay, choose Trinity; to step into Temple Bar from the lift, consider The Fleet and request a room suited to your tolerance for noise.

Bottom line

Choose Trinity Townhouse for a smaller, residential stay beside the college; choose The Fleet for Temple Bar, an in-house restaurant and easy transport connections.
