Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Český Krumlov to explore the castle and Old Town on foot?

Hotel Růže occupies a former college by the river; Hotel Latrán is in the historic quarter below the castle. We compare location, facilities and reviews.

Český Krumlov curves around a meander of the Vltava, with its 13th-century castle dominating an urban centre that retains streets and façades from several centuries. UNESCO recognises it as an unusually intact example of a small Central European medieval town; that picturesque layout also brings slopes, cobbles and restricted traffic. Staying within the historic fabric makes it easy to reach the castle courtyards early, but luggage and parking need planning. Two hotels offer different scales: the large Hotel Růže beside the river and the smaller Hotel Latrán north of the complex.

Hotel Růže occupies a former 16th-century Jesuit college at Horní 154. Its 71 rooms and four suites range from economy options to historic-style stays, and the hotel adds a Czech and international restaurant, bar, terrace and heated pool. It is a few minutes from Svornosti Square and about an eight-minute walk from the castle. Comments praise the architecture, location and pool, while some mention maintenance and differences between rooms; its Google score of 4.1/5 from 1,205 reviews for this location gives context to that mix. An official star category could not be confirmed.

Hotel Latrán, in the quarter of the same name, brings together two historic houses and rooms with distinct character, including an old timber structure. It is smaller, with double and triple rooms and family apartments; the DEPO pub is next door and the castle is only steps away. Guests often praise breakfast, cleanliness and staff; its Google listing showed 4.6/5 from 239 reviews in October 2026. Reception hours are limited, so late arrivals need to be arranged in advance.

In either case, cars generally cannot reach the door: the visitor office identifies the centre as a pedestrian zone and recommends outside car parks. The railway station is about a 30-minute walk from the centre, while intercity buses stop closer. Stone paving and slopes make large suitcases awkward, and some rooms in historic buildings have stairs or irregular layouts. Contact the hotel about luggage drop-off, parking or an accessible room before paying.

Růže suits guests who want a pool, restaurant and full hotel facilities in a landmark riverside building; Latrán works better for sleeping near the castle entrance in a smaller setting. Price is not the only criterion: lift access, room type and the most recent comments may matter more than distance on a map. With an extra night, the centre regains its quiet after day-trippers leave and lets you explore the castle early.

Bottom line

Růže offers a landmark building, pool and full-service hotel facilities; Latrán has a smaller scale and direct access to the castle. Check lift access, room type, luggage arrangements and recent reviews before booking.
