Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Carcassonne: inside the medieval citadel or below its ramparts?

Hôtel de la Cité offers a five-star stay inside the walls; Hôtel du Pont Vieux sits below the citadel, closer to the railway station.

In Carcassonne, sleeping inside or outside the walls changes the visit. The medieval city rises above the Aude and retains 52 towers and two defensive rings; its district remains open and inhabited, while the Count’s Castle and inner ramparts require a ticket. A night inside lets you walk when crowds thin; staying below makes arrival from the station easier and helps combine the citadel with Bastide Saint-Louis.

Hôtel de la Cité Carcassonne – MGallery Collection stands beside the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, on the site of the former episcopal palace. The five-star hotel combines neo-Gothic décor, gardens, a library bar, seasonal outdoor pool, spa and La Barbacane restaurant. Its location puts the Count’s Castle within walking distance and lets guests remain inside the walls after monuments close. Reviews note differences between rooms and uneven breakfast experiences, so confirm the room category and seasonal facilities.

Hôtel du Pont Vieux is on Rue Trivalle at the foot of the ramparts. The three-star hotel occupies an eighteenth-century house with 19 rooms, a shaded garden and panoramic terrace; some rooms also face the towers. It serves a buffet breakfast, offers a garage by reservation and can help with luggage, but has no lift and is unsuitable for guests with reduced mobility. Reception is staffed until 20:30, and late arrivals need to arrange the access code in advance.

The UNESCO-listed citadel can be explored for free as a neighbourhood, but the Count’s Castle and its ramparts require a separate ticket. The tourist office estimates a 30-minute walk from the station; a bus also links the station and Cité, and a shuttle train operates in season. With suitcases, staying outside the gates avoids cobbles and slopes; if your priority is an early visit or dinner inside the walls, a citadel hotel saves transfers.

The choice depends on the experience and access you want. Hôtel de la Cité offers an exceptional stay inside the fortifications, but it belongs to a higher category and budget; Pont Vieux combines proximity with a family-run atmosphere and terrace views. Check seasonal pool and spa availability, reception hours, parking and whether there is a lift. In a destination with slopes and old stone paving, those details can matter as much as the view of the towers.

Bottom line

Hôtel de la Cité prioritises a stay inside the fortifications and adds a spa and pool; Hôtel du Pont Vieux is a three-star base below the walls, with a terrace and garden. Choose according to budget, access, mobility and luggage.
