Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Groningen to walk from the station to the Groninger Museum?

Two central hotels let you compare an easy walk with luggage and a night in a historic building.

Many visitors first meet Groningen above the water. Groninger Museum occupies an island opposite the central station, linked to the route into town. The museum itself puts its entrance only about 300 metres from the trains and normally opens Tuesday to Sunday. That proximity changes the accommodation question: there is no need to sleep literally beside a gallery. Think instead about where to leave a bag, which streets you want to walk after dark and how much time to give the centre after the museum closes.

Flonk Hotel Groningen Centre stands at 50 Radesingel, inside the canal ring. The company estimates a walk of around ten minutes to the station, museum and Grote Markt; it offers 77 rooms, six apartments, a breakfast buffet and garage. For a one-night trip, it lets you unload luggage and continue without a taxi. Guests often value the position and breakfast, though views on sleep or bathrooms vary. The hotel itself announces renovation works: ask which areas are affected on your dates before booking a particular room.

Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys is at 53 Oosterstraat, deeper in the old centre. Its 60 rooms are individually styled around a courtyard, with choices from single and family rooms to suites. That variety gives the hotel character but also calls for attention: the business warns that not every room is reached by lift. Praise for atmosphere and position sits alongside complaints about ageing bathrooms. If stairs are difficult or your bag is heavy, confirming floor and bathroom type matters as much as comparing the rate.

The museum advises planning admission and checking its programme before travelling: exhibitions, exceptional closures and opening hours can change a one-day visit. From the station, the walk first crosses the bridges beside the museum building; from there it can continue towards Radesingel or further through town to Oosterstraat. Both hotels are walkable, but neither is a station annex. If arriving by car, compare parking terms: Flonk advertises a garage while Schimmelpenninck lists limited spaces requiring advance reservation. Their three-star hotel classifications describe the properties, not the scores left by guests.

The choice becomes practical when you picture your first hour. With a late train and luggage, Flonk balances the journey between station, museum and centre. If an evening in a courtyard building on old streets matters more than shortening the initial transfer, Schimmelpenninck offers a different stay. Compare the final price, breakfast, cancellation, room access and any building work before paying. The museum is close enough to the trains for the city, rather than only its galleries, to become part of the visit.

Bottom line

Flonk balances station and museum walks; Schimmelpenninck Huys adds old-town character but calls for closer room and access checks.
