From the train, Durham Cathedral is the goal of a walk that is not entirely level. UNESCO explains that the church and castle occupy a raised peninsula within a bend of the River Wear, a position that gave the medieval complex its defensive purpose. That geography matters before booking: a “central” hotel may be convenient for arriving with luggage, climbing to Palace Green, or both to different degrees. Two places to stay allow a useful comparison without promising a fixed rate or confusing hotel stars with guests' opinions.
Premier Inn Durham City Centre (Walkergate) stands at Freemans Place in the Walkergate area. The chain estimates around ten minutes on foot from the station and advertises standard, family and accessible rooms, a restaurant and breakfast. It is a practical base if your first task is to put down your luggage. You still need to cross the centre and climb towards the cathedral; this is not a room at the monument's door. The cathedral explains that a bus connects the station and Freeman's Place with the historic complex, a useful detail if you do not want to tackle slopes with a suitcase.
On Old Elvet, Delta Hotels Durham Royal County changes the emphasis. Marriott dates the hotel's origins to 1815 and advertises a four-star classification. It has a restaurant, bar, terrace and gym; some rooms, but not all, look towards the river or monuments. That combination appeals when the night in Durham is itself part of the trip. It involves a longer journey from the station than Walkergate, although it remains central and within walking distance of the peninsula. If views are the reason for booking, select the relevant room category.
The figures on the listings are guest scores and separate from a property's official or advertised classification. Travellers often value Premier Inn's location, staff and functional simplicity, though some mention breakfast waits. At Royal County they like the setting and service, but there are comments about particular rooms or breakfast. Rather than choose over a tenth of a point, compare the price for your actual date, whether breakfast and parking are included, the cancellation policy and the route with luggage. Premier Inn has no on-site parking; Marriott advertises limited paid spaces.
The cathedral is a working church, so check visitor hours and possible partial closures before fixing the itinerary. It charges no general admission, although it invites a voluntary donation, and documents the connecting bus from the station. If you arrive late and want an easy place to leave your bag, start with Walkergate. If you want a hotel with more facilities and a history of its own, consider Royal County on Old Elvet. Either way, the last climb towards the cathedral is part of getting to know Durham; plan the effort and time, not only the map distance.
Premier Inn Walkergate simplifies the station arrival; Royal County offers more facilities and historic character on Old Elvet after a longer walk from the train.
