Maskay guide

Where can you have tapas on Carrer de Montcada after Barcelona’s Picasso Museum?

Two different venues at Montcada 22: a historic no-booking bar and a bodega with continuous service and reservations.

Leaving the Picasso Museum brings visitors back onto Carrer de Montcada, where grand townhouses hold the collection between numbers 15 and 23. There is no need to travel far for a drink or tapas, but proximity can mislead: two different businesses use number 22, with almost opposite opening patterns and approaches to guests. Confusing their names in a search can mean arriving at a closed door or waiting for a table you thought had been booked.

El Xampanyet: a possible wait in the plan

El Xampanyet describes itself as Ca l’Esteve since 1929 and highlights anchovies and preserves. It keeps the rhythm of a wine-and-tapas bar: no reservations, split hours Tuesday to Friday, Saturday lunchtime only and Sunday closed. If the museum visit ends near the start of lunch, a stop for tapas and a drink is possible. Leave after half past three, or visit on Sunday, and that idea no longer works. Many guests enjoy the bar’s energy; others describe queues and little room to linger.

La Puntual: a table and a kitchen without a break

Bodega La Puntual, also at Montcada 22, occupies a former 1872 coffee roaster, according to its operating group. Its format is closer to a restaurant serving tapas and sharing plates. The website advertises continuous kitchen service from half past twelve until half past eleven every day and provides a booking channel. For a group or a museum exit outside El Xampanyet’s hours, that difference matters. The bill depends on how many portions, rice dishes and drinks are ordered; immediate proximity does not in itself make it inexpensive.

The museum visit determines the hour

The Picasso Museum publishes seasonal opening times and its Montcada 15–23 address. Check the day’s schedule, admission conditions and how long you want in the galleries before fixing a meal. It is hardly worth cutting short the early works and the Las Meninas series to fit a bar that may have a queue. Both businesses attract praise for produce and atmosphere, alongside reservations about waits, service or the size of some portions. Reading those accounts with the menus and hours is more useful than an abstract list of “best tapas”.

El Xampanyet suits visitors willing to wait for the energy of a historic bodega during its service windows. La Puntual offers more control to anyone who needs to book or eat between conventional sittings. They share a street number; only one leads to the table you actually want.

Bottom line

El Xampanyet suits a spontaneous stop during its limited hours; La Puntual takes bookings and serves continuously. Check the venue name at Montcada 22.
