Maskay guide

Where can you have coffee and pastries after visiting the University of Coimbra?

Descend from the Joanina Library to historic Santa Cruz or continue to Briosa for regional pastries.

The University of Coimbra is visited high on the hill; coffee and pastries wait below. That change in height makes a natural route between the Joanina Library and the lower town, rather than two disconnected pins on a map. After the Baroque rooms, courtyards and former palace, the city changes scale as you descend towards shops and squares. Two stops tell different periods of Coimbra’s life: a café in a former church and a pastry shop championing convent-style sweets since the mid-twentieth century.

Let your Joanina time shape the afternoon

The university explains that the ticket gives a specific time for entering the Joanina Library; other parts of the programme have different visiting rules. The library holds tens of thousands of books, and its Baroque building was completed in 1728. Secure that entry before setting a time for coffee. Once outside, descend towards the lower town through the historic streets; hills and paving make comfortable shoes useful. There is no reason to turn a route worth observing into a race to beat a café’s closing time.

Santa Cruz: architecture continues at the table

Café Santa Cruz Coimbra occupies the former São João de Santa Cruz church on Praça 8 de Maio. It opened as a café in 1923, and its interior still shows its connection with the square’s religious and social history. Its own crúzio pastry combines egg and toasted almond; the house runs cultural events and advertises Coimbra fado at certain times. After the library, this is a break that still feels part of a heritage visit. The room is consistently admired, while opinions on coffee and service are less unanimous. Check the programme for music and ask about payment methods.

Briosa: choose at the counter, then continue to the river

Pastelaria Briosa Coimbra is on Largo da Portagem, closer to the Mondego. Open since 1955, it offers a range of regional sweets alongside ice cream, savoury food and drinks. Products identified by the municipality include Santa Clara pastries, arrufada and castanhas de ovos; availability changes, so inspect the counter before ordering. Reviews value the range, although some visitors find the sweetness intense or quality inconsistent. It works for a single pastry with coffee or several to share later.

The choice depends on the story you want to continue. Santa Cruz keeps the conversation with Coimbra’s stones and history; Briosa focuses on recipes, variety and an exit towards the river. If your library time leaves little room, check both cafés’ opening hours first. The walk works best as a descent with two possible endings, not a compulsory checklist.

Bottom line

Santa Cruz turns coffee into another heritage stop; Briosa makes it easier to choose pastries to eat or carry away.
