After a Bodleian Library visit, Oxford makes more sense on foot than in a taxi searching for coffee. The Old Bodleian, Radcliffe Camera and Weston Library form a compact landscape of courtyards, domes and working libraries. Not every space admits casual visitors without a guided tour: the institution separates historic tours from Weston’s public exhibitions. Once the library schedule is settled, you can choose between two ways to extend the afternoon: a speciality coffee shop among the colleges or a High Street tea room.
Arrange the library before the break
Bodleian tours have their own capacity and schedule. On busy days, the institution warns that some same-day tickets sell out early. Check the official visit first, then decide when to stop for tea. On leaving, nearby Turl Street leads towards central Oxford; High Street takes the walk further east. Weston Library on Broad Street also has exhibitions and a café, but the library’s rating cannot stand in for the score of a separate café: the two venues compared here each have their own listing.
Espresso and a flexible stop on Turl Street
Missing Bean Turl Street is the first branch of a local business that opened in 2009. It serves seasonal espresso, rotating single-origin coffees, sandwiches and cakes. Its small shop at 14 Turl Street closes at 16:30 on weekdays, 17:00 Saturday and 16:00 Sunday. It is a practical pause if coffee matters and you want to continue towards the Covered Market. Reviews often value the drink and staff, though a table can be hard to find. Do not confuse it with the Magdalen Road roastery or other outlets.
An afternoon tea on High Street
The Grand Café Oxford, at 84 High Street, advertises tea, coffee, scones, pastries and light meals. Its decorated room offers a slower, more theatrical experience. The house claims a link to a coffee shop of 1650, but the practical priority is to read today’s menu and know that opinions are mixed: some enjoy the interior and tea, while others find service slow or the bill high. It closes at 18:30 Monday to Thursday and 19:00 Friday to Sunday, so this is no late-night answer either.
If the library visit runs long and little daylight remains, Missing Bean offers a cup without a detour, provided it is still open. If your group wants tea itself to be another Oxford scene and can allow for less predictable service, the Grand Café is the salon choice. Decide by your Bodleian finishing time and the kind of experience you want, not a claim that either is universally superior.
Missing Bean is a short, coffee-led stop; The Grand Café suits a walk built around its room and tea.

Missing Bean occupies a small shop on Turl Street, an Oxford lane connecting the Bodleian area with the shopping centre while remaining among the colleges. This was the brand's first café, opened in 2009, and its identity turns on coffee rather than a historic tea ceremony. The business roasts its b
Single-origin coffee and pastries near the Bodleian
The Grand Café occupies 84 High Street, a little east of the Bodleian's core. The business presents itself as heir to the site of an early English coffee house dating to 1650, a historical claim disputed by other Oxford venues; settling that debate is unnecessary to understand its present offer.
