Maskay guide

Where can you have coffee or chocolate after seeing Perugia’s Fontana Maggiore?

A table facing the fountain and a historic pastry shop offer very different pauses in central Perugia.

Fontana Maggiore stands at the centre of Piazza IV Novembre like a stone page to be read slowly: its medieval reliefs bring together work, the calendar and scenes from civic life. Perugia’s council describes it as a thirteenth-century work associated with Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. After walking around it, a coffee break need not take you far from the centre, but it does require a choice: keep the square in view or step into the memory of a historic café. That difference matters more than naming a universal winner.

Turan Cafè is at number 35 on Piazza IV Novembre itself. The company opened this branch in 2016 and advertises artisan chocolate, coffee and outdoor tables facing the fountain. Visitors often praise the hot chocolate and the position; not everyone finds the pastries or service equally memorable when it is busy. The brand also has a workshop and academy on Via dei Priori. Courses and guided tastings belong to that other location, so a workshop booking should not be confused with an unplanned pause on the square.

Pasticceria Sandri dal 1860 is a few steps farther along, at 32 Corso Pietro Vannucci. The Touring Club Italiano recognises it as a historic place; its interior and display explain why a café can form part of a city’s everyday heritage. Yet the room’s history does not guarantee a flawless visit. Recent accounts combine affection for the decoration with criticism of service, prices and uneven quality of particular pastries. Anyone coming for the atmosphere should first see what is offered today and what sitting down will cost.

The walk is simple: study the fountain’s carved panels, look towards the façade of San Lorenzo Cathedral and decide whether to drink with the square still in view or after following Corso Vannucci. Both addresses are reached on foot. For Turan, check opening hours for the Piazza IV Novembre branch rather than its other venues. For Sandri, directories disagree on contact details and the domain attached to the listing currently displays unrelated content; check current opening information before making a detour. A morning itinerary can fit coffee before continuing towards Palazzo dei Priori, but the square first deserves attention without a cup or a deadline.

Turan suits visitors who want Fontana Maggiore to remain in sight during the pause. Sandri offers an interior that tells part of Perugia’s social history, alongside more variable reviews. In either case, choosing a table also means choosing a viewpoint on the city. If time is short, staying opposite the fountain saves steps; if you want to explore Corso Vannucci, the historic pastry shop gives you a reason to enter and judge for yourself.

Bottom line

Turan keeps the fountain in view from its terrace; Sandri offers a historic interior, with more mixed reports on service.
