Cologne Cathedral dominates the station and square with two Gothic towers that took more than six centuries to complete: the first stone of the present building was laid in 1248 and work finished in 1880. After walking through the nave or looking back at the west portal from the forecourt, a café can become part of the route. Café Reichard stands opposite the Dom, while Café Wahlen offers a traditional coffeehouse on Hohenstaufenring, towards Rudolfplatz.
Reichard is the quickest stop: its history dates to 1855, and its current premises combine a glass pavilion with a terrace facing the cathedral. The display includes cakes, chocolates and Baumkuchen; breakfast and hot dishes are also available. Its location brings a practical trade-off: when the square is busy, especially on fine weekends, the terrace and dining room attract a crowd. The café lists daily opening, but check for holiday changes.
Wahlen changes the setting. Founded in 1911 and rebuilt after the 1942 bombing raids, it retains mid-century furniture and specialises in its own cakes and pastries. It sits near Rudolfplatz, so from the Dom you can walk through the centre or take a tram. Its hours vary by day and it closes on Mondays. Comments repeatedly praise the confectionery and décor, although some visitors prefer Reichard’s coffee or mention waits at busy times.
Choose according to the pace of your day: Reichard works when you have little time before a train or a walk towards the Rhine; Wahlen suits an unhurried dessert when a detour is welcome. The cathedral remains an active place of worship, not only a visitor attraction, so check visiting hours and respect services. For a sweet finish, one slice and a coffee are enough; if you need a fuller meal, Reichard also lists hot dishes and Wahlen serves breakfast and lunch options.
Reichard keeps the break beside the cathedral; Wahlen takes a short trip but offers a different room and a classic pastry counter.
