Maskay guide

Where can you have coffee after seeing the tiles at Porto’s São Bento station?

A Brasileira is close to the station; Majestic turns coffee into an architectural walk to Santa Catarina.

The hall at São Bento station is worth stopping for even without a train to catch. Some twenty thousand tiles painted by Jorge Colaço tell episodes from Portuguese history and the development of transport. Back outside, coffee can extend that reading of the city in two directions: climb a little towards Sá da Bandeira or walk further through the Baixa to Santa Catarina. Both cafés are historic, but they work at different paces and for different budgets.

A pause close to the station

Cafetaria Histórica A Brasileira stands at 91 Rua de Sá da Bandeira. It opened in 1903 and is now part of the Pestana hotel building, although the café, bistro and accommodation are not one experience. The café menu offers coffee, pastries and light meals, and it stays open into the evening. If you must return to São Bento or continue to Avenida dos Aliados, this is the easier pause to fit into the route. Ask for the menu of the room in which you sit, as the restaurant has another offer.

Walk to the Art Nouveau of Santa Catarina

Majestic Café, at 112 Rua de Santa Catarina, is further from the station and asks you to arrive ready to look around. Its Art Nouveau decoration, the history that began as Café Elite and the street’s commercial life explain its appeal. It opens Monday to Saturday but closes Sunday. Visitors praise the interior while also questioning prices or waits. If the aim is simply an espresso before boarding, the detour may be unnecessary; as an architectural visit, it makes different sense.

Choose by time, not fame

Both cafés draw mixed opinions. At A Brasileira, people value the room and service while raising concerns about cost and pace; at Majestic, some find the building overshadows the drink, while others enjoy the ceremony. Check current hours and menus, and remember that the Pestana hotel’s rating does not represent its café. São Bento also remains a working station: keep passages clear while looking at the tiles and leave a margin if catching a train.

For coffee directly linked to a visit to São Bento, A Brasileira is better placed. Majestic rewards a longer walk when you want to make the break another heritage stop in Porto.

Bottom line

A Brasileira keeps the pause short; Majestic invites a longer visit along Santa Catarina.
