Maskay guide

Where can you have good coffee after visiting Utrecht’s Dom Tower?

A music-filled café and a canal-side takeaway offer two specialty-coffee breaks after the tower.

A Dom Tower visit begins on Domplein, where admission is arranged before the ascent; the official site says bags cannot be carried into the tower and provides lockers. After the stairs, coffee can mean a seated pause or the start of another walk along the canals. Utrecht offers both rhythms without a long detour: Voorstraat has a coffee-and-music room, while Oudegracht has a small counter that left vintage retail behind to focus on the cup.

The Village Coffee & Music occupies 46 Voorstraat. The company roasts coffee and surrounds it with music, pastries and space to sit. Reviews praise the drinks and atmosphere, although some visitors find the music too loud for conversation. The brand has another door at 44 Voorstraat with fewer opening days and a branch at Science Park. Check the hours for number 46 for an ordinary post-tower visit.

Blackbird Coffee stands at 222 Oudegracht beside the canal. Its website makes clear that it no longer sells vintage furniture or bicycles and has no indoor tables. It prepares coffee to go or for drinking on its outdoor bench, even in porcelain if you remain there. Customers praise the drinks and waterside setting; weather and limited seating can make it less comfortable. It closes Monday and Tuesday and opens only from midday on Sunday, a crucial detail if you climb the tower early at the weekend.

The two choices change the route. From Domplein, Voorstraat leads towards the northeastern part of the centre and an indoor conversation. Oudegracht takes you to the canal and works better if you want to keep walking, particularly in good weather. The tower climb is a guided visit; book it before fixing a café stop so the day is not planned backwards. Do not treat Blackbird as a rain shelter either: the outdoor format is central to the experience, and the business states it plainly.

If you want a seat, music and a roaster’s work, The Village answers the need. If you would rather take a specialty coffee along the water, Blackbird offers another identity. Both are in the centre and can be reached from the tower on foot. The sensible choice depends on the day of the week, the weather and whether the climb leaves you needing a chair or more city.

Bottom line

The Village offers a room, music and house-roasted coffee; Blackbird serves an outdoor canal-side cup and closes Monday and Tuesday.
