Maskay guide

Where can you have a beer or whisky after visiting Edinburgh Castle?

A pub tucked into a close off the Royal Mile or a whisky-and-beer bar on West Bow.

After walking through Edinburgh Castle, the downhill route across the Old Town invites a pause. Yet “a pub near the castle” does not describe one experience: some doors open onto the Royal Mile while others hide in a close or along the bend of West Bow. Choosing deliberately avoids a hurried round in the first visible bar. The Jolly Judge and The Bow Bar offer a comparison between a cider-and-beer refuge and a counter where whisky occupies more of the conversation.

Jolly Judge: finding the door in James Court

The Jolly Judge is at 7 James Court, down a close in the old town. It describes itself as independent, with low ceilings, corner seats and a range of beers, ciders and whiskies. CAMRA records awards for its cider and beer, a more concrete detail than calling it “the best” without explanation. It opens at noon each day, though closes earlier on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. Space is limited: customers often value its cosy character, but a seat can be difficult to find at busy hours.

Bow Bar: ask before ordering

The Bow Bar stands at 80 West Bow on the street descending towards Grassmarket. Its website separates whisky and beer and lists cask and guest lines subject to change. Enter with a simple preference — a gentler malt, bitter ale or cider — and ask the staff for guidance rather than selecting by a familiar label. It opens from noon to midnight every day. Visitors praise the range and staff knowledge, while noting that the bar fills up and a long discussion about bottles can slow service.

A stop, not necessarily dinner

Both pubs fit a walk from the castle without public transport, but Old Town slopes and steps matter for anyone with limited mobility. Jolly Judge requires finding the right close; Bow Bar is lower down towards Grassmarket. Neither address should be offered as a guarantee of a full dinner. Some accounts mention snacks or savoury pies, but food available on the day needs checking. Read the closing time for your day, especially at Jolly Judge, and decide whether to eat first. Drinks other than alcohol are possible too: ask at the bar what is actually available.

For a tucked-away pause a few steps off the Royal Mile, James Court is the more direct choice. If you want to compare cask beers or explore whisky before continuing to Grassmarket, West Bow offers the more specialised counter. The best stop after the castle still leaves time to notice the neighbourhood and finish the walk without a rush.

Bottom line

Jolly Judge offers a corner below the Royal Mile; Bow Bar focuses on whisky and cask beer on the descent towards Grassmarket. Neither replaces a confirmed dinner plan.
