Maskay guide

Where can you have a beer and dinner after visiting the Roman Baths in Bath?

Two central pubs end a Roman Baths visit differently: pies and ales at The Raven, or beer brewed on site at Bath Brew House.

A visit to the Roman Baths ends in Abbey Church Yard, in the middle of Bath. The museum presents the Great Bath, Roman rooms and Sacred Spring; outside, the city changes character without requiring a long transfer. Beer and pub dinner can extend the afternoon, but one practical question comes before choosing a venue: do you want to walk into an alehouse spontaneously or book a table with room for a group? The Raven and Bath Brew House answer differently, and kitchen hours matter more than an abstract list of famous bars.

The Raven of Bath occupies 6–7 Queen Street, in two Georgian townhouses. Its published history separates the building's past from the present pub identity: it took the Raven name in 2004 and expanded in 2022. The menu centres on savoury pies with meat fillings and vegetarian or vegan alternatives, alongside cask ales and other drinks. The house takes no reservations. That gives the walk spontaneity but means allowing for a possible wait, especially if you need a dinner table. The website lists food service until 21:00 every day.

At 14 James Street West, Bath Brew House offers a more open scene: a garden with retractable cover, screens showing sport and an active microbrewery within the pub. It advertises beer made there and brewery tours as a separate activity. Its food menu and outdoor space suit those who prefer to sit as a group or book ahead. Do not expect a small pub's quiet if there is a match, music or an event. Kitchen hours vary by day and end before the bar shuts: on Sundays, for example, the site says food finishes at 20:00.

Planning also depends on when you leave the museum. In October, the Roman Baths list closing at 18:00, with last admission an hour earlier; other seasons differ. A visit stretching to closing time still leaves room for dinner at either pub, but check your date and do not confuse bar closing time with the end of food service. The Raven lies north of the abbey area; Bath Brew House takes you farther west through the centre. Both are city walks rather than an evening excursion beyond Bath.

Customer accounts add nuance: The Raven is praised for ales and its several rooms, with occasional reservations about food or service; Bath Brew House draws people for its own beer and garden, though some criticise dishes or the pace at busy times. If a pint and pie without a rigid plan matter most, choose Queen Street and accept that you may wait. If you are in a group and want a planned table around beer brewed on site, check James Street West and book. A Roman Baths ticket guarantees neither a pub table nor food service until closing time.

Bottom line

The Raven suits an unbooked pint and pie; Bath Brew House offers an on-site brewery, garden and bookable table, with food service ending before the bar closes.
