Maskay guide

Where to go for tapas in León’s Barrio Húmedo, and what should you order?

A walking route around Plaza de San Martín compares two Barrio Húmedo venues: one with nearly a century of Leonese cooking, the other focused on sharing plates, wine and local produce.

The Barrio Húmedo gathers around Plaza de San Martín, between León Cathedral, Calle Ancha and Plaza Mayor. The city describes it as a network of streets whose names preserve traces of old guilds; among its bars stand San Martín church, Casa de las Carnicerías and Plaza Mayor’s market, which has operated since the seventeenth century. “Going for tapas” here does not always mean sitting down for a full dinner: many venues serve a small bite with a drink, and the walk is about trying one or two things before moving to the next square.

Restaurante La Gitana, at Calle Carnicerías 7, describes itself as a dining house dating from 1926. Its menu moves through cecina, Leonese blood sausage and chorizo, tripe, croquettes, hake and beef cooked on a hot stone; the bar is downstairs and the dining room upstairs. It is a flexible stop for wine and a tapa or a longer meal with sharing plates and dessert. Comments praise the traditional cooking and welcome, while some note that the bar can be noisy and that booking is sensible for a sit-down meal at busy times.

On the square, Tabierna Los Cazurros puts the focus on sharing plates. Its “Cazurra” tasting plate combines picadillo, roasted peppers, roast ham and blood sausage; the menu also lists cecina, tripe, eggs with potatoes, cheese and wines from León. Its position on the square makes it easy to watch the neighbourhood’s movement before continuing along Zapaterías or Platerías. Comments often value the generous portions and wine list, although some mention waits and uneven service when the room fills up.

A good start is to walk by the Cathedral and along Calle Ancha, enter the Barrio Húmedo from Plaza Mayor and let your appetite set the pace. Ask what tapa comes with a drink that day: the tradition is broad, but the specific offer changes by venue and service. La Gitana lends itself to a fuller meal, while Los Cazurros encourages sharing several plates at the centre of the district. If you are travelling in a group or want a dining-room table, confirm availability by phone rather than arriving when the square is at its busiest.

Bottom line

La Gitana lets you move from bar to dining room and try homestyle cooking; Los Cazurros suits shared plates and local wines on the square. At either place, ask what tapa is being served that day.
