Maskay guide

Where can you enjoy a coffee after visiting Bologna’s Anatomical Theatre?

The Archiginnasio preserves its 1637 Anatomical Theatre and the memory of Bologna’s former university. Afterwards, Caffè Terzi offers a break centred on espresso, while Caffè Zanarini adds pastries and tables beside Piazza Galvani.

The Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio was built between 1562 and 1563 as a unified seat of the University of Bologna. Its galleries are covered with the coats of arms and inscriptions of teachers and students; upstairs, the wooden Anatomical Theatre, designed in 1637 for anatomy lessons, recalls a period when knowledge was taught before an audience of students. The building is now a municipal library, but the library is not open as a tourist attraction and the theatre requires a reservation. On leaving for Piazza Galvani, two cafés offer different breaks: Caffè Terzi focuses on specialist coffee, while Caffè Zanarini pairs espresso and pastries with the Pavaglione porticoes.

Terzi began in 2001 with an explicit decision: focus the shop on coffee and tea, and experiment with beans and roasting to bring out different profiles. Its original branch is on Via Oberdan, a short walk from the Archiginnasio, and works as a counter where you can taste a cup, ask about its origin or buy coffee to take home. Anyone expecting a conventional espresso may find more intense or acidic notes; asking the barista for a softer profile can help. The hours listing checked shows opening from morning to late afternoon, but the official website does not publish a weekly schedule for this branch, so confirm before going.

Zanarini is at 1 Piazza Galvani, beside the façade of the former university palace. The city archive records that it opened as a café-pastry shop in 1930 and became an elegant meeting place after the war. Today it serves coffee, tea, hot chocolate, pastries, cakes and aperitivo, indoors or at outdoor tables. The address invites visitors to linger rather than grab and go, especially if they want to watch the square; Bologna Welcome lists daily opening from 07:00 to 21:00. Recent public feedback is more divided: pastries and surroundings are praised, but some diners complain about inconsistent coffee, waiting times and prices. The location is part of the experience, not a guarantee of a flawless cup.

The choice depends on what you want from the stop. Terzi is for anyone who treats coffee as a subject and wants to compare origins; Zanarini is for a historic room and a pastry beside the square. Both are in the centre and can be paired with Piazza Maggiore, San Petronio and the arcades of Via Farini. The Anatomical Theatre can be visited only with a reservation and subject to institutional availability; arrange that visit first and leave the café as a flexible ending, not the other way around.

If specialist coffee interests you, ask about the bean and brewing method before choosing. If you are travelling with children, want pastries or need outdoor seating, Zanarini may suit you better, although it is sensible to expect more activity and expense. For a quick espresso, Terzi is more direct. In either case, the short walk from the Archiginnasio lets you continue sightseeing without leaving the historic centre.

Bottom line

Terzi prioritises espresso and its origins; Zanarini adds pastries and tables overlooking the square. Book the Anatomical Theatre separately.
