Maskay guide

Where to try Wakayama ramen: Ide Shoten by the station or Marutaya at night?

Two restaurants present the local pork-and-soy broth from different angles: a celebrated shop near the station and a central branch open late.

In Wakayama, ramen is often called chuka soba, and it has an identity that goes beyond a regional label. Its pork-and-soy broth can look dark and dense, yet each shop balances richness, savouriness and salt differently. Two restaurants help explain that range without leaving the city centre: Ide Shoten, whose history is tied to the Ide-kei style, and Marutaya in Burakuri-cho, a lunch-and-evening option that grew from the same tradition.

Ide Shoten began as a street stall in 1953, according to the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum. Long cooking of pork produced a cloudy, mellow broth that later gave its name to the Ide-kei style; the shop pairs it with thin noodles, pork, bamboo shoots, spring onion and plum-blossom-shaped kamaboko. The classic side is hayazushi, a piece of pressed mackerel sushi eaten while the bowl is being prepared. It is about a ten-minute walk from Wakayama Station and lists continuous hours from 11:30 am to 10 pm, closing Thursdays.

Marutaya offers a central Burakuri-cho setting and a longer day: local tourism information lists lunch and evening sessions, continuing until 2 am, with Monday closure. Its founder trained at Ide Shoten and opened the first branch in 2002, but the brand has added its own details. At this shop, diners mention boiled eggs and sushi for self-service at the counter, as well as sides such as chicken with ponzu. Some visitors find the broth salty; others praise the quick service and friendly staff.

The choice depends on your itinerary. Ide Shoten fits a daytime visit: it is close to the station, making it easy to return to the train or continue into the centre. Marutaya is more convenient if your walk ends in Burakuri-cho or you want dinner after the usual hour, although it is not beside the main station. Visible reviews show that both shops can draw queues at peak times and that their strong flavour is not for everyone. Check weekly closures and understand how counter-side dishes are charged before taking them.

Wakayama pairs its central castle with the coast and routes towards Koyasan or the Kumano Kodo in the wider prefecture. If you are visiting briefly, plan ramen around transport rather than rushing across town: a local bowl can be lunch before a walk or the end of a day in the shopping district. Ide Shoten is the reference for the style’s history; Marutaya is a practical alternative for a later meal.
