Tartini Square occupies the site of an inner harbour that was filled in in 1894 and is now Piran’s main square. It is named after composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini, born here in 1692; his bronze statue faces his birthplace, while the buildings around the square reflect the town’s long relationship with Venice. From this centre, you can walk through the old-town lanes towards smaller squares and reach two seafood restaurants with sharply different styles. Fritolin pri Cantini serves seafood through an informal counter-ordering system; Restaurant Pirat offers a dining room, table service and a broader menu of fish, seafood, pasta and risotto.
Fritolin is on Prvomajski trg, a small square a few minutes’ walk from Tartini. Guests order at the counter and receive a number in the shape of a shell; food and drinks may follow separate payment arrangements, so ask how the system works when you arrive. The offer centres on calamari, fish and seafood, with polenta, salads and lemonade. The local tourism board says it is a family-run business that has been open for more than fifteen years and lists daily hours from 11:00 to 22:00. Reviews praise generous portions and flavour, but also warn that queues can grow during busy season. It is not the right recommendation for anyone with an immediate connection or who wants to sit down without a wait; it works for a casual, direct meal in the historic quarter.
Restaurant Pirat, at 26 Župančičeva ulica, is a better fit for a longer meal and table service. The tourism profile lists daily fish grilled or baked, mussels, prawns, scampi, pasta, risotto and homemade desserts, with a terrace facing the bay. Published hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 20:00. Online comments often value the fish’s freshness and the service, although some question presentation and price. To avoid surprises, ask about the size and cost of the daily fish before ordering and check closing time if you plan a late dinner. The walk from the central square crosses narrow streets; Fornače parking is outside the centre, and the official advice is to continue by bus or on foot.
The choice is not simply about which menu looks longer. Fritolin offers square-side atmosphere, self-service and a more casual experience, although waiting time is unpredictable. Pirat offers table service and more ways to prepare fish, with a sea view advertised by the venue itself, but it is sensible to check availability and consider the price of fresh fish. If you are visiting the walls, St George’s Church or Tartini’s house, both stops fit into the same compact walk. In Piran, where the old town is pedestrian and its lanes lead towards the sea, first decide how much time you have, then choose a dining format and finally check the day’s opening hours.
Fritolin is informal and may involve a wait; Pirat offers table service and more preparations. Both are in the old town.
