Maskay guide

Where can you try Sardinian flavours after exploring Castello in Cagliari?

After Castello’s walls and towers, Marina offers two ways to read Sardinian food: land-based recipes at Sa Domu Sarda and seafood at Antica Cagliari.

Castello looks over Cagliari from a limestone hill; its Pisan towers, walls and steep lanes explain why the district served as a centre of power for centuries. After exploring the cathedral and bastions, the walk descends towards Marina, the harbour district of arcades, urban façades and lanes leading to Via Sassari and Via Sardegna. The question is not whether Sardinian food is about the sea or the land, but how both traditions meet in the island’s capital. Osteria Sa Domu Sarda champions meat, cheese, bread and shepherds’ recipes; Antica Cagliari Ristorante gives more space to fregola, shellfish and fish.

The descent from Castello makes a clear transition: from views over the gulf to the lower streets where Cagliari’s relationship with its harbour remains visible. There is no need to rush. The municipal Castello route passes bastions, squares and the cathedral area; from there, steps and slopes lead down to Marina. Anyone with limited mobility, travelling with young children or walking in hot weather should allow time for breaks and check access before choosing a restaurant. Both options are in the central area, but the elevation makes the map distance less straightforward than it looks.

Sa Domu Sarda explains in its own manifesto that island cooking is not limited to fish and also grows from the work of farmers and shepherds. Its table favours local meat, cheese, pasta, bread and traditional desserts, alongside a wine cellar featuring small Sardinian producers. Antica Cagliari, at 49 Via Sardegna, distinguishes this restaurant from its bistro and its Poetto venues; its menu brings together seafood, fregola, bottarga, fish and regional dishes. The comparison helps with the decision: visitors seeking an inland view of the island may prefer Sa Domu, while a meal led by the sea points towards Antica.

Public comments about both exact addresses include praise for Sardinian flavours, attentive staff and the freshness of seafood; they also contain less consistent accounts of service, waiting times or portion sizes. Rather than presenting either place as perfect, choose according to what you want to eat and book if time is tight. Antica Cagliari lists lunch and dinner every day; Sa Domu Sarda also publishes both services and accepts reservations. Hours can change on holidays, so a quick call before descending the hill is a simple precaution.

For a longer pause after the heritage walk, Marina offers a way to finish the route through both food and city life: Sa Domu Sarda introduces Cagliari’s land-based Sardinian pantry, while Antica Cagliari emphasises seafood and dishes from the coast. If the group cannot decide, check the exact restaurant’s menu before walking over; this also prevents confusion between Antica’s branches or the assumption that all Sardinian cooking is seafood. A useful order is to explore Castello in daylight, descend without rushing and sit down at the venue that best fits the meal you want.

Bottom line

Castello leads down to Marina and two different tables: Sardinian land-based cooking at Sa Domu Sarda and seafood at Antica Cagliari.
