Maskay guide

Where can you eat salmon soup after returning from Suomenlinna to Helsinki harbour?

The ferry returns to Market Square; the Old Market Hall offers a soup counter and a café with a broader menu.

Returning from Suomenlinna brings a small logistical reward: the public ferry lands at Market Square, close to Vanha Kauppahalli. After walls, sea and wind, salmon soup becomes less a culinary curiosity than a practical meal. The same market offers two ways to eat it. SOUP+MORE concentrates on soups at lunchtime; Café Story adds a table, pastries and other dishes. The choice depends as much on the day of the week as on appetite.

From the ferry landing to an 1889 market

The HSL ferry connecting the centre with Suomenlinna operates throughout the year and uses the Market Square landing. Once ashore, walk towards Eteläranta and enter the Old Market Hall, open since 1889. Check your return time before planning lunch, especially if you have booked another visit. The building's hours and each stall's hours are different: an open market door does not mean the kitchen you want is still serving.

Two soups in one building, two rhythms

SOUP+MORE Vanha Kauppahalli lists creamy salmon soup with dill and chives, country bread and other changing soups. It serves from 11:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday and closes on Sunday. It is the quick stop if your ferry arrives in time and everyone wants soup. Café Story, at the heart of the same hall, serves salmon soup alongside meatballs, a vegetable choice, coffee and pastries. It opens on Sundays, although the kitchen closes before the café.

Choose without confusing branches or hours

SOUP+MORE has another location in Hakaniemi, away from this route; make sure you find the Eteläranta 1 branch. At Story, check whether the lunch menu is still available when you return from the fortress. Travellers describe good flavours at both but also busy seating and differences in texture between the soups. For a short, salmon-centred meal, the specialist counter fits. If you return on Sunday or travel with people who prefer different dishes, Story gives you more flexibility.

Bottom line

SOUP+MORE handles a quick lunch Monday to Saturday; Story also opens Sunday and offers more dishes.
