Maskay guide

Where can you eat Portuguese food after visiting Guimarães Castle?

Two historic-centre tables: Buxa on Largo da Oliveira and Taberna d’Avó on Rua Egas Moniz, each with a different pace and setting.

Guimarães Castle stands above a city whose history is tied to the emergence of Portugal. From there, the route can descend past the Dukes’ Palace and through stone streets to the UNESCO-listed historic centre. Lunch need not interrupt that walk: Restaurante Buxa Guimarães is on Largo da Oliveira, a square made both for crossing and lingering, while Taberna d’Avó Guimarães occupies a quieter address on Rua Egas Moniz. Both appear in the municipal directory of traditional Portuguese kitchens.

From fortified ground to the table

UNESCO describes the centre’s development between two medieval poles, the castle to the north and monastic complexes towards the south. Walking towards Largo da Oliveira lets you see that transition instead of treating the castle as an isolated photograph. Buxa has indoor tables and a square-side terrace; diners mention cod, octopus and meat. A public listing shows Thursday closure and lunch and dinner on the other days, though calling to confirm is wise. Some reviews value the welcome and position; others report waits or bills that did not meet initial expectations.

Taberna d'Avó stands at 109 Rua Egas Moniz. Guest accounts dwell on cod fritters, petiscos and bean or tomato rice, often served as a sequence. Explanations of the dishes are appreciated, although some visitors describe delays or less memorable results. A public listing marks Monday as closed, but that should not be presented as a guaranteed timetable without direct confirmation. Nor can a price quoted in an old menu review be treated as today's rate.

Make the choice work for your day

For a meal looking over the square before continuing through the old streets, Buxa fits naturally into the walk. For a smaller tavern and several preparations, allow more time for Taberna d'Avó and call ahead. In either case, the value is in joining the heritage visit to a specific table without promising that every tourist-facing restaurant serves the same cooking at the same cost.

Bottom line

Choose Buxa for a square-side meal; choose Taberna d’Avó for petiscos and rice in a small room, after confirming its hours by phone.
