Leaving the Guggenheim, Bilbao does not force you to stay beside the river or travel all the way to the Old Town for food. A walk through the Ensanche leads towards Moyúa and Calle Diputación, where two almost neighbouring counters show different styles of pintxos. The question is not which is “best” in the abstract: it matters whether today is Sunday, whether you want a table, whether ham and a hot dish appeal, or whether your group prefers choosing several bites at a busy bar.
A riverside museum and a street for food
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao gives its address as 2 Abandoibarra and publishes hours and entrances on its website. After the galleries, the route towards Plaza Moyúa takes you into the Ensanche without a detour to Plaza Nueva. Allow time for the museum before fixing a table reservation: temporary exhibitions and individual interests change the length of a visit. On Diputación, venues keep different hours even though their doors seem almost adjacent.
Ham and food made to order at La Viña
La Viña del Ensanche is at 10 Diputación. Bilbao Turismo dates its history to 1927 and highlights Iberian ham and hot pintxos, including a small pan of egg, foie, mushrooms and purée. The business separates bar and restaurant: the former offers a more informal stop, while the latter has lunch and dinner sittings. It closes Monday, Sunday and holidays. If your museum visit falls on Sunday, this recommendation cannot provide lunch; choose another address.
A counter open on Sundays too
Bar El Globo – Diputación occupies number 8. It is the original branch, not the newer Plaza Nueva outlet. Gratinated pintxos and the broad display let you build a meal from several pieces. It opens daily and starts at noon on Sunday; this branch takes no reservations. Customers appreciate the choice and atmosphere, but its popularity can mean a queue or limited room to linger. Read the menu and the cost of drinks and larger plates before assuming that a succession of pintxos will cost less than a set meal.
If your group wants to talk at a table and try ham with food made to order, plan around La Viña’s hours. For a more spontaneous route, especially on Sunday, El Globo gives you greater flexibility. Both addresses allow you to continue to Moyúa or Abando, making food part of the city walk instead of an interruption to the museum day.
