Maskay guide

Where should you have lunch after the Musée d’Orsay: café or bistro on rue du Bac?

Le Pont Royal suits a Monday-to-Saturday stop; Les Antiquaires makes room for a slower lunch and opens Sunday too.

The Musée d’Orsay still has the scale of the railway station it once was: a vast nave, former platforms turned into galleries and art that can occupy an entire morning. On leaving, hunger creates a smaller decision that shapes the rest of the day. Rue du Bac starts by the Seine and offers two tables close to each other. Café Le Pont Royal offers a brasserie stop; Les Antiquaires invites a longer pause at a bistro in the antiques district. Both are outside the museum, so no admission ticket is needed to enter.

Leaving time matters more than distance

Orsay opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes Monday. On Thursdays it stays open until 21:45; on other days it closes at 18:00, according to the museum. Its cafés and restaurant inside require museum admission, so they are not options for returning after you have left. On rue du Bac, Le Pont Royal lists 10:00–20:00 Monday to Saturday, whereas Les Antiquaires opens seven days a week with kitchen service from 11:00 to midnight, ending at 23:30 on Sunday. A Sunday visit or a late Thursday departure makes the hours decisive.

Two paces on one street

Le Pont Royal, at number 8, combines French and Italian dishes with coffee. It suits a break before continuing towards the Pont Royal and Tuileries or returning to the river. Some people praise its espresso and pizzas; others report less successful food or service. Les Antiquaires, at number 13, has banquettes, a wooden bar and a terrace on a relatively quiet pavement. Its bistro cooking and reservations make lunch a more deliberate part of the walk. Praise for the welcome and menu classics is common, although some diners also consider the bill high.

A useful route after the meal

If your plans stay on the Left Bank, rue du Bac itself leads past shops and galleries; Rue du Bac and Solférino are on metro line 12, and the RER C serves Musée d’Orsay. For the Tuileries, head back towards the Pont Royal. These businesses need not be called the cheapest in Paris to be useful: they answer a specific museum, street and timing question. Read the current menu and, at Les Antiquaires, consider booking if you need to leave at a fixed time.

Bottom line

Choose Le Pont Royal for a straightforward meal before 20:00 Monday to Saturday; Les Antiquaires suits a bistro table, booking or Sunday.
