Maskay guide

Where can you try Kurashiki bukkake udon after walking through Bikan?

Two Furuichi branches serve different versions of Kurashiki’s signature udon: quick near the station or leisurely beside the canal.

Kurashiki’s canal reflects white-walled storehouses, willows and former merchant houses. After walking through Bikan, the local dish that best matches the town’s pace is bukkake udon: springy noodles with a concentrated sauce, served hot or cold rather than in a deep broth. Furuichi Nakaten sits near the station and shopping streets; Bukkake-an stands beside the historic quarter and gives the same culinary tradition more room to breathe.

Furuichi began as a family business in 1948; Nakaten opened in 1969 and is among its oldest branches. Okayama’s tourism guide links the company to the development of Kurashiki bukkake udon and describes a busy shop shared by residents and visitors. Sweet-savoury sauce coats the chewy noodles, with more than ten variations and tempura available as an add-on. The branch lists hours of 9 am to 9 pm, but advises checking for irregular closing days.

Bukkake-an chooses a different setting. Its quieter dining room is beside Bikan’s storehouses and serves udon in Bizen ware, Okayama’s local pottery tradition. The official site highlights careful preparation and space for groups; the local tourism body lists dishes with prawn tempura or meat at prices above a simple bowl. Reviews often praise flavour and texture, but also include criticism of service or waits. A polished room does not guarantee identical service on every visit.

Check the map before choosing: Nakaten is about a five-minute walk from Kurashiki Station, useful when a train is coming soon or you arrive hungry; Bukkake-an adjoins Bikan and lets you connect lunch with the canal walk and Ohara House. Both belong to the same company, but their reviews, atmosphere and opening times refer to separate locations. Nakaten lists last orders at 8:30 pm; Bukkake-an closes at 7 pm.

Bukkake udon is served with sauce designed to mix through the noodles, so try a first bite before adding extra condiments. Add tempura for contrast or choose a plain version to focus on wheat and dashi. If you need a quick meal, Nakaten is the transit-friendly branch; if Bikan is the centre of the day, Bukkake-an offers a more settled dining room. Check the exact branch’s opening notice and leave time for one last walk beside the canal.

Bottom line

Nakaten suits a quick meal near the station; Bukkake-an pairs better with Bikan and local pottery. Check each branch separately.
