Maskay guide

Where can you try Franconian food in Rothenburg after walking the town wall?

Zur Höll offers a wine tavern in a distinctive historic house; Gasthof Butz pairs home cooking with beer gardens and lunch service.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is recognised from a distance by its towers, steep roofs and continuous wall, but the roughly four-kilometre circuit takes about two and a half hours. When the walk ends, an appetite calls for more than a postcard setting. Two Old Town businesses serve regional Franconian cooking in different ways: an intimate wine tavern and a family-run inn with lunch service and beer gardens.

Weinstube Zur Höll is on Burggasse, in a stone-and-timber building that the business describes as one of Rothenburg’s oldest houses. Its vaulted dining room, regional cooking and Franconian wines make for a slower dinner. The online menu is not always dated, so ask what seasonal dishes are currently being served. Its afternoon schedule and differing directory information about Sundays make a call ahead advisable.

Gasthof Butz, on Kapellenplatz, combines an inn and restaurant. Two dining rooms and two beer gardens offer options depending on the weather and group size; the kitchen publishes lunch and dinner sittings and closes on Mondays and Thursdays. Its menu is described as home-style Franconian cooking with regional ingredients and local wines. Some public reviews also refer to overnight stays, so not every comment is exclusively about a meal.

Rothenburg’s history explains why dining belongs in the itinerary. The town, once a Free Imperial City, retains a walled enclosure with gates, towers and information panels about local history. Start near Rödertor, follow the wall walk and descend through one of the gates near the centre to finish by the market. The route includes steps and stretches exposed to the weather; carry water and leave time to sit down before kitchens close.

Choose Zur Höll for a small dining room, historic atmosphere and local wines that can extend the evening; Gasthof Butz is more flexible for an early meal or outdoor seating. In a town with a strong flow of day visitors, booking matters as much as the dish: check each kitchen’s opening days, ask for the current menu and allow for a wall walk that may run longer when you stop at towers and viewpoints.

Bottom line

Choose Zur Höll for an intimate dinner and Franconian wine; Gasthof Butz is more flexible for lunch, dinner and outdoor seating. Check kitchen hours and reserve at either.
