Maskay guide

Where can you eat Himeji oden after visiting Himeji Castle?

Two restaurants near the station serve Himeji oden with ginger and soy; one adds a local brewery tradition.

Himeji Castle dominates the city with white walls and a silhouette that reveals itself as you walk from the station. Visiting means climbing steep stairs, passing through gates and studying defensive details; after leaving, hunger often competes with the urge to keep exploring. The local dish for a pause is Himeji oden: ingredients simmered in broth and served with ginger and soy sauce, a pairing connected to regional production. Shusentei Nadagiku Kappa Tei and Oden to Kushikatsu Himeji no Omise lie on the way back towards the station.

Kappa Tei, run by the Nadagiku brewery, presents two styles: black oden with ginger soy and white oden with a sauce made from sake kasu. The contrast shows how the same simmered ingredients take on a different character through their accompaniment. The meal can include the brewery’s sake and seasonal dishes. It is the stronger choice for turning lunch into a small exploration of flavour and Hyogo’s sake culture.

Himeji no Omise is inside Himeji Festa, connected to the station, and combines ginger-soy oden with kushikatsu, breaded and fried skewers. Its izakaya format is more casual and flexible: order a few pieces and continue your journey. Public feedback is more mixed and its aggregate score is lower than Kappa Tei’s, though the location and extended hours are clear advantages. For a meal with more context and sake, Nadagiku has the more specialised approach.

From the castle, the walk to the station takes around 15 to 20 minutes depending on the exit and pace. Both restaurants fit at the end of the visit, before a train or another stop. Kappa Tei lists lunch and dinner hours, closes Wednesdays and has some Tuesday variations; Himeji Festa lists Himeji no Omise as open daily until 23:00. Check holiday hours and leave a buffer if you need to sit down before your next train.

Ginger soy distinguishes Himeji oden from the more common way of serving the dish elsewhere in Japan, where mustard is usual. Try a piece without extra sauce first, then alternate broth and ginger to notice the balance. After the castle’s rooms and corridors, this straightforward local flavour makes an easy finale, paired with a walk back along Otemae Avenue and the shops near the station.

Bottom line

Choose Nadagiku for two Himeji oden styles with sake; choose Himeji no Omise for a casual, later stop beside the station.
