Leaving Santiago Cathedral does not mean the city ends at Praza do Obradoiro. Old-town lanes lead towards taverns where a plate is shared, while another route reaches Rúa de San Pedro, an old approach used by pilgrims. Eating after the visit may mean entering a century-old tavern without a guaranteed table or booking a longer meal in a casa de xantar. These are different answers to the same appetite for Galician cooking, and the time you leave the cathedral may decide which one works.
O Gato Negro, on Rúa da Raíña, retains a marble counter, sharing plates and Ribeiro served in a cup. The tavern dates its origins to 1922 and advertises empanada, octopus and market seafood; it also warns that particular dishes sell out. It does not take bookings. Visitors with time can look in, assess the space and order from what remains. For a group or someone catching a train, a wait can turn a good idea into a rush, however warmly reviews describe the atmosphere and food.
O Dezaseis is at 16 Rúa de San Pedro, in former stables adapted for dining. The tourism office names grilled octopus as its signature dish; the house also lists San Simón cheese, mussels and Galician broth. Its system accepts online bookings for up to six diners and directs larger groups to phone or email. Unlike the unplanned stop at O Gato Negro, this allows you to fix a table and continue the walk to San Pedro with a time in mind. Reviews praise the octopus and atmosphere, though some visitors report waits or mixed value across dishes.
Watch kitchen hours, not just dining-room hours. O Gato Negro advertises lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday and closes Sunday and Monday. O Dezaseis opens its dining room Monday to Saturday, but lunch cooking ends at 15:45 and evening cooking at 23:15; Sunday is closed there too. If a service, Mass or a longer cathedral visit changes your exit time, check the official websites. And if you want a particular seafood dish, ask about that day’s availability and price before ordering: fresh-produce menus change.
For a short, flexible meal within the old town, the Rúa da Raíña tavern keeps the cathedral close. To make lunch part of a walk along the pilgrims’ approach, O Dezaseis leads you to San Pedro and offers a table you can plan. Neither requires the absolute label of “best restaurant”. The useful choice is the one that fits your appetite, companions and real departure time, without cutting short a visit to Santiago just to reach lunch.
O Gato Negro offers no-booking tavern plates; O Dezaseis allows a reserved, seated meal.
