Maskay guide

Where can you eat and have a beer after visiting Canterbury Cathedral?

Two central pubs extend the walk: The Parrot in a historic building or The Foundry for beer brewed on site.

Leaving Canterbury Cathedral, the change of scale is immediate: from the monumental precinct to narrow streets where everyday city life continues. Opening and access to the cathedral can change for services, events and partial closures, so check its own website before deciding when to eat. Two central addresses tell different stories over beer and a meal. The Parrot focuses on the traditional pub and an old building; The Foundry puts brewing at the heart of the experience.

The Parrot at 1–9 Church Lane stands in the old street pattern close to the cathedral. The local beer guide describes it as one of Canterbury's oldest buildings, with medieval roots; the pub itself advertises up to six cask ales, burgers, seasonal dishes and vegetarian and vegan choices. The building's age should not be confused with the age of every recipe served there today. For visitors, its advantage is the pairing of architecture and food without leaving the centre. Sunday roast is offered from noon until it sells out: if that is your reason for coming, do not leave it until evening.

A walk towards Stour Street reaches The Foundry Brewpub at number 77. Its defining feature is more than the bar: a former Victorian foundry now holds a family business's brewery, distillery and restaurant. Beers including Foundry Torpedo and Foundrymans Gold are presented as house production. The food mixes English pub references with an American brewpub influence. Production tours and tastings are available, but they are separate experiences: a lunch reservation does not include a guided tour.

Both places make a walkable stop after the cathedral, although their pace differs. The Parrot suits visitors who want to remain among historic lanes; The Foundry involves a little more walking and rewards those keen to try beer made there. Public customer accounts praise the former's atmosphere while occasionally criticising service or a dish; they applaud the latter's beer and staff, with isolated concerns when the kitchen is busy. Those impressions do not replace a choice: they help set the right expectation for each table.

For dinner, kitchen closing time is decisive. The Parrot lists food until 21:00 Monday to Saturday and 20:00 on Sunday. The Foundry closes at 19:00 on Sunday, and its last food order may be earlier, so confirm it with the venue. If a cathedral visit runs late, a call or booking check can prevent a wasted walk. For a meal in an old building close to the precinct, choose Church Lane; for an afternoon built around beer and, if separately booked, how it is made, choose Stour Street.

Bottom line

The Parrot offers a historic pub near the cathedral; The Foundry adds its own brewery, with kitchen last orders worth checking, especially on Sunday.
