Maskay guide

Where can you eat on a budget in South Beach, and where is a nearby buffet?

Compare a sandwich counter open late, a neighbourhood Cuban café and a hotel buffet north of South Beach, with cost kept in view.

Eating on a budget in South Beach does not mean giving up local flavours, but it helps to step away from the most tourist-focused Ocean Drive terraces. La Sandwicherie sells baguettes and salads from a counter; Las Olas Cafe covers breakfast, Cuban coffee and sandwiches on Sixth Street; Florida Buffet Restaurant serves a hotel buffet at the Riu in Mid-Beach, farther north. They do not sit in the same price range: the first two let you order one simple meal, while the buffet is designed for variety and can cost considerably more.

La Sandwicherie keeps its street-counter format, with French baguettes, fresh ingredients and a house vinaigrette. Regulars value the speed, long hours and sandwiches; there is no formal dining room, and a late-night charge applies after 10 p.m. Las Olas offers a different scene: café con leche, empanadas, breakfast and Cuban sandwiches in a small space. Comments praise the flavour and service, though morning queues and parking can be inconvenient. At either place, sharing a sandwich or choosing one main item helps control the total.

Florida Buffet, inside Riu Plaza, is outside South Beach on Collins Avenue to the north. Breakfast may be included with a bed-and-breakfast or half-board hotel rate; visitors coming from elsewhere should confirm access, dinner hours and which drinks are included. Diners praise the variety and salad station, but views on service are mixed and the published restaurant range is $31–50. It is an option for a long shared meal, not an automatic way to spend less.

La Sandwicherie is open daily from 7 a.m. until 5 a.m.; Las Olas Cafe opens at 7 a.m. and closes between 8 and 9 p.m., depending on the day. Florida Buffet is listed with breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m., but contact RIU before travelling because it is in Mid-Beach and service may depend on hotel access. If budget is the priority, start with a sandwich or Cuban meal; the buffet makes sense when your group wants variety and will eat enough to make use of it.
