Maskay guide

Where can you try Aosta Valley cooking after visiting the Roman Theatre?

Two places beside Porta Praetoria offer different takes on local cooking, from mountain recipes to wine, amid Roman Aosta.

In Aosta, Roman history is not locked behind a ticket barrier: it appears in the pattern of streets, gates and façades that still shape the centre. Augusta Praetoria was founded in 25 BC; Porta Praetoria retains three openings and the Roman Theatre, a short walk away, preserves a 22-metre façade. After seeing that ancient scale, the most natural break is close by: streets beside the gate offer Aosta Valley food and places to turn a walk into a lingering meal.

Trattoria Praetoria is at Via Sant’Anselmo 9 and describes a seasonal menu of Aosta Valley dishes, cheese, cured meats, polenta and mountain recipes. Some visitors praise the fondue, crespelle and meat; others report less consistent results. The official site lists lunch and dinner on most days, but Wednesday is lunch-only and Thursday is closed. Check the menu and mention any dietary needs.

La Grenette occupies Via Porta Praetoria 69, beside the ancient city entrance. Its offer crosses Italian and Aosta Valley cooking, with pasta, meat, polenta and wine; the name recalls the grain market once held in the square. Comments value the service, setting and some meat dishes, while others find certain cuts expensive. Directory hours do not fully agree, so a quick call can prevent arriving after the kitchen has closed.

The route can begin at Porta Praetoria, continue to the Roman Theatre and follow Via Sant’Anselmo, part of the historic axis that crossed the city. Admission to the theatre is included in a combined ticket for several archaeological sites; opening hours and conditions vary by season. For a meal, Praetoria offers the clearer regional trattoria profile, while La Grenette leans towards meat and wine. Neither requires leaving the centre or taking transport.

The better choice depends on the day’s pace: if your visit ends in mid-afternoon, check the lunch service; for a long dinner, confirm which dishes are available and reserve. Aosta lets visitors alternate Roman remains and Alpine produce within a few streets, but not every restaurant serves both shifts. With the ancient gate as your landmark, a short walk is enough to sit down and read the city through its cooking.

Bottom line

Praetoria offers Aosta Valley classics with a split service; La Grenette pairs meat, pasta and wine on the street of the ancient gate. Check availability and hours before planning your meal.
