Maskay guide

Where can you try Alentejo food after visiting Évora's Roman temple?

A walk from the temple towards the walls leads to two approaches to Évora's food traditions: Fialho and Dom Joaquim.

The Roman temple's columns dominate one of Évora's most recognisable views, but the city does not end with that image. UNESCO places the monument in a historic centre shaped over more than twenty centuries, where streets lead from the ancient high ground towards squares, churches and walls. A meal can follow the same movement: leave the temple, walk through the old town's whitewashed streets and choose a table that says something about the Alentejo. Two restaurants allow different approaches without pretending to prove a definitive list of the “best”.

Fialho, on Travessa do Mascarenhas, offers a classic reading of the region. Portugal's tourism board documents three generations of family continuity and a broad repertoire of petiscos, meat, game, fish, regional wine and convent-style sweets. It suits a leisurely stop after walking through the centre, with time to discuss dishes before ordering. The same authority explains that starters may be placed on the table for guests to choose, not as compulsory purchases: ask which will be charged. Tradition is no reason to skip the menu or ignore the budget.

At Dom Joaquim, opened in 2007 near the walls, regional recipes sit alongside chef Joaquim Almeida's own ideas. The tourism board describes Évora PDO cheese, eggs with farinheira and lamb, as well as fish, vegetarian dishes and a children's menu. That range helps when travellers do not all want the same meal. Its location extends the walk from the temple towards the edge of the historic centre; it is not a table beneath the columns or an answer for someone who must leave immediately for the station.

The comparison does not need a promise of fixed prices: menus and the cost of lunch depend on what you order. At Fialho, the array of starters and the restaurant's established reputation can make lunch the day's main event. At Dom Joaquim, the contemporary dining room and broader choice offer another approach to the region. Public opinion is positive overall but includes reservations about service, expectations or the bill, so read recent comments and book without assuming a score answers every personal preference.

Before leaving the temple, confirm opening and booking by phone or through reliable official channels. Portugal's tourism board lists Monday closure for Fialho and Monday plus Sunday evenings for Dom Joaquim; these details can change. A website previously attributed to Fialho displayed a security warning during our check and is not offered as a booking route. The practical choice is straightforward: a traditional table with time to explore the menu, or a slightly longer walk to a contemporary interpretation of Alentejo cooking. Both carry the visit to Évora into its food.

Bottom line

Choose Fialho for a classic meal rooted in Alentejo recipes; Dom Joaquim offers a contemporary room and broad menu after a longer walk towards the walls.
