Maskay guide

Where should you eat after seeing Bern’s Zytglogge: at Kornhauskeller or by BärenPark?

Two ways to continue a Bern old-town walk: a table beneath Kornhauskeller’s vaults or house-brewed beer by the bear park.

The Zytglogge is more than a clock to photograph. It anchors an old town of arcades, fountains and streets that invite visitors to keep walking after the mechanical figures have performed. A practical question follows: eat close to the tower, or use lunch as a reason to cross the historic centre towards BärenPark? These are different plans, and both work on foot.

A monumental dining room close to the clock

Kornhausplatz is a short walk from the tower. Here, Kornhauskeller Restaurant & Bar occupies the vaulted basement of the former granary. The stairs lead to a hall whose painted decoration and height make the architecture part of the meal. Its menu brings together regional products, a lunchtime offering and à-la-carte dishes. It is not a low-budget stop, and diners' accounts are a reminder that a spectacular room does not guarantee that every dish will please everyone.

This choice works when time is short, when a sheltered table appeals, or when the afternoon will continue through the shopping streets and arcades. The website separates restaurant, kitchen and bar hours; check the relevant service before setting out, especially for a late meal. A reservation reduces uncertainty in a hall that also hosts events.

Follow the old town to the bear park

Travellers who want lunch to continue the route can walk through the old town towards the river. Altes Tramdepot Brauerei Restaurant occupies a former tram depot beside BärenPark. Its terrace looks back towards the old town, while beer is brewed inside: Helles, Märzen and Weizen are regular styles, and special taps change. The food menu and children's choices mean this need not be only a drinks stop.

The longer walk rewards visitors with a different outlook but requires more time. The restaurant recommends booking dinner, and some reviewers describe waits or table difficulties when it is busy. On an unhurried day, the route adds fountains, arcades and the Aare to the meal. Even if the weather rules out the terrace, the former tram hall remains part of the visit.

How to choose

There is little value in picking an assumed “best restaurant in Bern” from a score alone: these venues serve different purposes. Kornhauskeller concentrates historic architecture and proximity to the Zytglogge; Altes Tramdepot centres house-brewed beer and a view from the eastern end of town. Kitchen hours differ from a venue's overall opening hours. Check the menu, booking and route for the day, then let the walk decide the table.

Bottom line

Kornhauskeller saves steps and provides a striking historic room; Altes Tramdepot turns lunch into the end of an Aare-side walk, with house-brewed beer and a terrace.
