Rotterdam’s Markthal is recognised by its residential arch and the vault covered by Cornucopia, a monumental mural by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. The venue opened in 2014 near the historic Laurenskwartier and brings market stalls, restaurants and homes together in a building where visitors can walk under cover even in rain. After looking up at the mural and visiting the Cube Houses nearby, lunch can go in two directions: LALA Latin Soul Food serves Latin-inspired tapas and combination plates; Andalus Fish – Markthal prepares fish, kibbeling and seafood platters.
LALA suits a shared meal: its O’ LALA Fiesta brings together small bites, while the menu also lists tropical salads and huevos rotos. Mural art and bright colours give the dining area a stronger identity than the general market floor. Andalus Fish, by contrast, works as a fishmonger with a kitchen: guests can choose fried kibbeling, grilled salmon, soup, salads or seafood, and its official website lists items with current prices. Upstairs seating offers a pause away from the main circulation. The distinction matters for families or mixed tastes: tapas in the middle of the table or fish-based plates.
Reviews of LALA often mention variety, flavour and attentive staff, although some visitors find portions small for the cost or describe delays when it is busy. At Andalus Fish, comments praise freshly fried fish and soup, but recent criticism also addresses consistency and service. They are not equivalent experiences: LALA has a higher score and mostly enthusiastic comments; Andalus has a more modest score and divided opinions, useful context before choosing. Both scores belong to individual businesses inside the hall, not to Markthal as a building.
The main market opens 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and Saturday, until 9 p.m. Friday, and from noon on Sunday; each restaurant may keep its own schedule. LALA opens from noon, usually until 9 p.m. and later on Friday and Saturday; Andalus Fish starts at 10 a.m. most days and at noon on Sunday. Blaak station is a few minutes’ walk away, and the Cube Houses and Oude Haven make easy next stops. Check opening times if you want an early lunch: market stalls and restaurants do not necessarily open together.
For shared Latin tapas and plates, LALA feels more like a restaurant; Andalus Fish focuses on seafood and receives more mixed reviews.
