Diocletian’s Palace is not a building with one exit. Its former walls enclose streets, homes, shops and the cathedral; after the Peristyle, your route may continue to a nearby courtyard or cross into Varoš. That geography is more useful for choosing lunch than an unqualified list of “best restaurants”. Konoba Korta serves Dalmatian food within the palace street plan. Konoba Marjan, to the west, tells a family story tied to Adriatic fish.
From Peristyle to plate
If the visit ends near the cathedral or City Museum, Korta keeps the walk intact at 3 Poljana Grgura Ninskog. Leave towards the Riva and continue to Šperun and 1 Senjska if you would rather move beyond the busiest streets into Varoš. Both can be reached without transport. The actual walking time depends on your exit and crowds; do not confuse a restaurant inside the palace with one in the shadow of Marjan Hill.
Korta: a courtyard and a broad menu
Konoba Korta offers octopus, pršut, buzara, smoked-mussel risotto and fish, as well as meat and vegetable dishes. Its published menu helps you compare before sitting down and marks allergens. Diners appreciate the courtyard and service; some find particular starters expensive. It works for a group that wants to stay within the historic walls without everyone ordering the same fish. Published opening begins at 08:00, but check kitchen hours before planning a late lunch.
Marjan: a family and the day’s catch
Konoba Marjan was opened in 2001 by Marija and Ivan Božić-Štulić and is now run by their son. Its cooking centres on local fish and Dalmatian recipes. Visitors mention fish soup, black risotto and shellfish, although the catch changes. Ask which fish is available, how its price is calculated and how long preparation takes. The venue listing indicates Sunday closure, a crucial point if your Split visit falls on a weekend.
The choice need not identify one “best” restaurant for everyone. Korta rewards visitors who want the Roman setting to remain present and need a varied menu. Marjan requires a little more walking but puts family history and seafood first. At either table, verify the day’s dish and final price from the current menu, not an old recommendation.
Korta keeps the meal inside the palace; Marjan asks you to walk into Varoš for Dalmatian seafood.

Leaving Diocletian’s Palace towards Šperun changes the scene: the busiest central routes recede and Varoš, the old quarter west of the historic core, begins. At 1 Senjska, Konoba Marjan tells a family story documented by names and a date on its own website: Marija and Ivan Božić-Štulić opened it in
