Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Heidelberg to visit the castle and Old Bridge on foot?

Hotel am Schloss puts you beside the Kornmarkt funicular; Goldener Hecht lets you wake by the Neckar and Old Bridge.

In Heidelberg, 'near the castle' and 'beside the Old Bridge' describe different scenes. The fortress dominates a hillside; the bridge crosses the Neckar below, beside the Altstadt. Kornmarkt, Marktplatz and pedestrian streets lie between them. Staying here lets you start sightseeing on foot, but it does not remove the castle's climb or bring the main station next to the old town. Read that geography before choosing a room from its photograph.

Hotel am Schloss Heidelberg solves the uphill part first. It occupies the upper level of the P12 building beside the lower funicular station at Kornmarkt. From there, take the railway up to Schloss or walk along the Burgweg indicated by the monument's management. Its terrace faces the castle, and some rooms do too, but not every category carries that view. The website even explains the lift from the parking structure to the seventh floor, useful when arriving with luggage.

Hotel Goldener Hecht shifts the priority: Steingasse opens directly onto the Old Bridge. The small family-run hotel has individually styled rooms and a continental breakfast. Waking here makes an early walk beside the Neckar or a photograph of the bridge easy before heading towards Hauptstraße. The castle remains within reach, but you must cross the centre towards Kornmarkt and then ascend. 'Walkable' does not mean 'flat'.

For either hotel, separate two journeys and potential costs: getting from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof into the centre and making the final ascent to the castle, by funicular or on foot. The castle's official site directs visitors from the station by bus towards Rathaus/Bergbahn and from Kornmarkt to Burgweg. With luggage, mobility needs or children, check access and room conditions rather than saving a few metres on a map. To choose, decide what you want outside the door first: the funicular and climb, or the bridge and river.

Bottom line

Choose Hotel am Schloss if the castle and funicular shape your visit; choose Goldener Hecht if you would rather step straight to the river and Old Bridge. From Hauptbahnhof, plan a transfer into the old town either way.
