Maskay guide

Where can you eat sausages or Bavarian food after crossing Regensburg's Stone Bridge?

Each end of the bridge offers a different meal: quick sausages at Wurstkuchl or a seated Bavarian meal with beer and views at Spitalgarten.

The Stone Bridge is more than a photograph of Regensburg: it divides two possible rhythms for lunch. Its twelfth-century arches belong to the old town and Stadtamhof ensemble recognised by UNESCO. Approaching from the cathedral, the Danube appears a short walk away, and before setting foot on the bridge there is already an opportunity for a brief food stop. Cross to the opposite bank and lunch can become a longer table with beer and a view.

At the south end, Historische Wurstkuchl preserves the idea of a riverside sausage kitchen. The business links its history to medieval harbour and construction workers; today it remains focused on charcoal-grilled sausages, sauerkraut and mustard made to its own recipe. That specialisation is both its strength and its limit. For someone who wants to taste something distinctly Regensburg before walking on, it is a clear stop; a family seeking a broad menu and long meal may find it too narrow. Queues feature in several visitor accounts.

After crossing the bridge, you reach Stadtamhof, a settlement with a history of its own before it was finally absorbed into the city. There, Spitalgarten Regensburg makes another use of the Danube: from the beer garden, the view returns to the cathedral and old town. The kitchen advertises Bavarian dishes, changing recommendations and beer connected with the Spital. Hot food service ends before the venue closes, so a late arrival does not guarantee dinner. Its reservation system also does not take same-day bookings.

The choice is about time more than a contest over which place is more 'authentic'. Wurstkuchl lets you eat quickly and continue sightseeing; Spitalgarten invites you to sit down and give the afternoon more room. Both are reached on foot, and the same bridge leads back. With little time, eat on the south bank before crossing. If the walk is done and you want to explore local beer and regional cooking at a slower pace, continue to St.-Katharinen-Platz.

Bottom line

Wurstkuchl works for a quick local speciality beside the bridge. Spitalgarten is better for a seated meal, local beer and a view back towards the old town.
