Maskay guide

What can you see in Little Italy and Nolita beyond the restaurants on Mulberry Street?

Two cultural stops on Mulberry Street go beyond the food postcard: an Italian American history museum and an active parish basilica.

Mulberry Street changes pace through the day: restaurant tables draw visitors looking for pasta and cannoli, but a few steps away are places that explain why this corridor became a symbol of the Italian American experience in New York. The Italian American Museum brings together objects and stories of immigration, culture and community life; the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral preserves a religious and urban history that predates the current cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Both stops are on the same street, but their visiting rules differ.

The museum is at 151 Mulberry and is open to the public Thursday to Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m. Its exhibitions include objects and Sicilian marionettes; visitors especially value accounts that tell the neighbourhood’s history through specific pieces and staff interpretation. Some feel the space is small for the admission price, so it helps to know that this is an intimate museum rather than a large complex. General admission is listed at $15; Tuesday and Wednesday visits are by appointment only.

A few blocks north, the basilica remains an active parish. Visitors comment on the interior, architecture and catacomb tours, but distinguish between entering the church and taking a guided underground tour: the latter requires a booking with the relevant operator and may not be available at every time. Mass or preparations may also be under way, so parish activity takes priority. The listing checked showed 4.7/5 from 1,669 opinions; comments describe the catacomb tour as particularly engaging for anyone interested in urban history as well as architecture.

Start at the museum and continue north to the basilica, pausing on Grand Street or in Nolita to see how shops and façades change further uptown. The museum has limited public hours and the church follows its liturgical calendar: check both before setting out, and do not plan a catacomb tour without a ticket. This turns Little Italy from a run of menus into a walk through migration, faith, commerce and local memory. If you only have an hour, the museum offers a focused visit; with more time, reserve the church tour in advance.
