Nice on foot and without admission: from market to bay
Nice can be read on foot without turning every stop into a purchase. A day begins among stalls in Old Nice, gains height above the bay and ends beside the Mediterranean. Cours Saleya, Castle Hill and the Promenade des Anglais charge no admission, but each has its own rhythm. This order uses the market’s morning activity and leaves the seafront for a slower final stretch.
From the market into Old Nice
At Cours Saleya, flowers, fruit, vegetables and local foods occupy the square Tuesday through Sunday. An antiques market takes over on Mondays, changing the scene. Browsing is free; purchases and café tables are not. Check the calendar and stall hours before leaving, since arriving late may reveal a square quite different from the one you pictured.
The city seen from both sides
From Old Nice’s streets, climb to Parc de la colline du Château. No intact castle waits at the summit; instead there are remains, paths, a waterfall and viewpoints. The view toward the Baie des Anges contrasts with the harbor and explains the city’s shape. Entry is free. City hours extend to 8 p.m. April through October and 6 p.m. November through March; the climb takes time and is more demanding than a level market walk.
Back to the Mediterranean
The Promenade des Anglais follows the coast for almost seven kilometers, but a central stretch is enough to finish the day. Blue chairs, the bay and pebble beaches create a scene with no ticket. Restaurants and private beach concessions charge for their services; the public walk does not. Set a realistic point to turn back rather than trying to cover the full distance.
Leave room to pause, and bring water and shoes suited to the climb and distance. Reverse the route if your accommodation is by the sea. The market, park and promenade were checked with the tourism office and City of Nice; verify market changes and temporary closures for your date.
