Avignon in a day: palace, bridge and a garden above the Rhône
Avignon is best understood on foot: the palace square, arches reaching over the Rhône and elevated garden at Jardin du Rocher des Doms are close together. The tourism office suggests a one-hour, 2.3-kilometre loop through the historic area, but entering the monuments makes it a longer day. Decide in advance which interiors you want to see.
Start at the Palais des Papes
Set aside the morning for the palace if you want to explore its halls, chapels and gardens. In 2026, rooms previously closed to visitors opened and digital interpretation in six languages was introduced. From March to early November, it opens 9 a.m.–7 p.m.; last entry is an hour before closing. Admission is €16 and the combined ticket with the bridge is €19.50. Book ahead and remember the building is not air-conditioned and has many stairs.
Continue to Pont Saint-Bénézet (Pont d’Avignon)
The 12th-century structure became famous through the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon”, although only four arches remain: it is not a footbridge across the river. The visit is short and gives a different perspective on the Rhône. Individual admission is €6; if you are also visiting the palace, the combined ticket costs less than buying both full-price tickets separately. A lift is available; check that it is operating.
Finish with a pause at Rocher des Doms
The free garden sits above the palace and looks across the city and river, towards Mont Ventoux on clear days. Its tourism listing warned in August 2026 that only part had reopened after works; hours vary by season and may not be guaranteed. Check the city notice before climbing.
If you plan to enter both monuments, allow at least half a day and time for lunch. If you prefer an outdoor walk, the official loop gives you an orientation in an hour, with pauses for views from the river and garden. October days are shorter than summer days. Check hours and fares for your date and wear comfortable shoes: Avignon has slopes and cobblestones.
Plan around your time and mobility; confirm current hours and prices.

The Palais des Papes dominates the central square and recalls Avignon’s period as a papal residence. Historic palace
Pont Saint-Bénézet, known as the Pont d’Avignon from the song, preserves four arches over the Rhône and a chapel. Visitors can walk along the protected section but cannot cross the river: the original medieval structure was much longer.
Historic bridge
Above the palace, the garden sits about 30 metres over the Rhône. Its paths look across the city and river and, on clear days, towards Mont Ventoux. It is a free pause between monuments, though reaching it requires a climb from the centre.
