Maskay guide

What can you do in Little Havana to experience its history, domino games and Calle Ocho culture?

A walk linking domino tables, a 1926 cinema and live music to experience Calle Ocho as a lived-in neighbourhood, not just a bar strip.

Little Havana makes more sense when you walk Calle Ocho at different times of day than when you tick off a list of murals. The corridor became a place of arrival and gathering for generations of Cuban families and now brings together restaurants, cafés, shops, cultural institutions and music. Start at Domino Park, or Máximo Gómez Park, where regulars sit at covered tables to play dominoes and chess. The scene invites you to watch and listen, not interrupt: ask before taking photographs and leave tables in use to the players.

A few steps away is Tower Theater Miami, which opened in 1926. As Calle Ocho changed with the arrival of new neighbours, the cinema began showing English-language films with Spanish subtitles as well as Spanish-language films; the screen became an introduction to American life for newcomers. Today the theatre presents independent and international films, plays and cultural events. Its programme changes, so choose a show before arriving and leave time to see the lobby and any exhibitions that are open.

If you want to end the walk with music, continue to Ball & Chain, whose name is associated with a club first opened in 1935. The present venue combines a patio, stage, Cuban food, cocktails and dancing; check the band and entry rules before going, particularly if you are travelling with children, since after 8 p.m. guests must be at least 21 and show identification. Comments often praise the atmosphere and performances, although some visitors find the food or service less consistent than the music.

Link the three stops on foot and leave time for shop windows, coffee at a walk-up window and everyday street life beyond the busiest stretch. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the theatre and Ball & Chain depend on their show calendars and hours. If your visit coincides with Viernes Culturales, the organisation schedules music, art and walking tours along part of Calle Ocho; check the current date, since the festival does not take place every night. The walk then brings together public space, migration history and a musical night out without reducing the neighbourhood to a single postcard.
