What to do in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: from kayaking to trails and science

Las Canteras opens the way to surfing and kayaking; El Confital extends the walk between volcanic coast and sea, and Museo Elder offers another way to explore the city.

The city begins where the promenade ends

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria can be explored as a string of neighbourhoods, but much of its character becomes clear along the coast. Las Canteras stretches for a little over three kilometres and is not one uniform beach: La Puntilla, quieter swimming areas and the La Cícer end each have a different feel. The city tourism office lists surfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, diving and swimming among the activities on the shore, and identifies La Cícer as the place for waves.

On the water, Salitre Sport runs clear-kayak, kayak and snorkelling experiences that bring visitors closer to the seabed at Las Canteras with a guide. Its focus is on observing and understanding the environment, not just paddling. The snorkelling trip includes a short briefing and equipment; departures depend on the tide and sea conditions. One planning detail matters: when checked on September 29, 2026, the upcoming-activities calendar showed no published dates, although the operator still listed tours and rentals. Check availability with the company before building the rest of the day around it.

La Cícer: learn before paddling into a wave

Visitors who would rather start with a surfboard will find schools beside La Cícer, the stretch of Las Canteras dedicated to surfing and bodyboarding. University Surf School offers lessons for different ages and skill levels, from adults and children to university students, as well as private sessions. Its website lets visitors book online and choose a specific session; the day’s activity still depends on sea conditions and each student’s starting point.

Recent Google Maps reviews describe patient, approachable instructors, with comments praising the way they support people standing on a board for the first time. Teaching matters as much as the wave here: learning where to position yourself, following instructions and entering the water when the instructor considers conditions suitable makes the sport a way to understand the coast. Afterwards, visitors can continue on foot through Guanarteme’s cafés and seafront without changing neighbourhoods.

El Confital: a walk through coast, rock and history

Farther north, the landscape does not become remote; its scale changes. El Confital occupies the La Isleta peninsula and is protected for its natural value. LPA tourism lists two walk-in approaches: from Las Canteras along the seafront promenade or from Las Coloradas. Its guide describes a seven-kilometre coastal trail, about two hours, between the El Atlante monument and the bay. Fifteen interpretive panels introduce the site’s geology and biology, surf culture and layers of history.

The walk can lead to Cueva de los Canarios and the remains of bunkers, a coastal battery and trenches; natural pools form along the water at low tide, while Cruz de El Confital looks out towards sunset. This is a rocky coast, so footwear and tide conditions matter more than the idea of simply “going down to the beach.” Google Maps comments highlight the views and the chance to walk or unwind; the area is best enjoyed with time and without expecting beach services at every turn.

When the plan calls for shelter, science takes over

Beside Parque Santa Catalina, Museo Elder offers an urban pause between the sea and the city. Interactive exhibitions, workshops and a large-format cinema make the visit exploratory, with science modules and activities that change through the year. The city council also describes a greenhouse featuring innovative Canarian ecosystems and crops. Visible reviews repeatedly praise the planetarium, 3D cinema and family galleries, although some recent visitors have reported modules that were not working; the current programme and condition of individual experiences can change.

Together, these options show why Las Palmas is more than a beach day: visitors can paddle or snorkel with a guide, take a surf lesson in a neighbourhood shaped by the waves, walk a protected volcanic coastline and finish among science exhibits. The sea sets the conditions and the city offers alternatives; plan around the tide and reservations, and keep the trail or museum as options that do not depend on surf.
