Virginia offers several state-aid paths, but two answer different college choices. The Commonwealth Award is need-based aid for undergraduates at public institutions; VTAG helps with tuition at participating private colleges and is not based on financial need. Choosing a school, confirming residency and filing with the right campus matter as much as the federal form.
To qualify for the Commonwealth Award, the current statute requires Virginia domicile, at least half-time enrollment in an eligible program after the term census date and financial need; Selective Service rules apply when relevant. The institution awards the grant, and funding does not guarantee every eligible person the same amount. Start with the FAFSA and send results to the college. Certain students may use VASA under state rules; confirm whether that route applies and ask the campus for its priority date.
VTAG works differently: it is annual, non-need-based tuition assistance for Virginia students at approved private institutions. Students complete the form each year and submit it directly to the college financial-aid office, which verifies residency, enrollment and category. The 2026–27 form set September 15 as the priority date; it included a September 15–October 1 window for new or readmitted applicants and December 1 for spring-only applicants. As of October 2026, the priority and fall dates have passed; anyone starting in spring should call the campus promptly. The 2027–28 calendar still needs confirmation.
When reviewing an offer, ask whether aid is estimated, approved or already posted. VCU student discussions include cases in which grants appeared close to the start of classes and others whose initial package omitted expected help; these are individual accounts, not proof of a statewide delay. If an amount is missing, ask financial aid in writing whether it is waiting for FAFSA, residency documents, verification, state allocation or funding. Do not count an estimate as guaranteed money.
Before committing to a college, compare net cost: tuition and fees, housing, food, transportation, books, institutional scholarships and confirmed state aid. The Commonwealth Award and VTAG are not interchangeable and do not apply to every campus. Check the current institution list, ask what is needed for renewal and keep copies of forms and notices. SCHEV provides the statewide framework; the college aid office determines the individual file and deadline.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
