The Vermont Grant may support a Vermont resident even when the student attends college out of state, but it requires two steps that are often confused. The VSAC grant is need-based aid for eligible undergraduate study, full- or part-time; FAFSA supplies financial information, but the specific application is completed through MyVSAC. Filing FAFSA alone may leave the state file incomplete, so check both confirmations in your account.
The first screen is residency: the program is intended for Vermonters. A student must be accepted or enrolled in an undergraduate degree or certificate approved for federal Title IV aid and generally must not already hold a bachelor’s degree. VSAC administers the state grant for colleges in Vermont and other states. The amount depends on financial circumstances, total cost of attendance and available funds. VSAC reported a $1,000–$15,350 range for 2025–26; that is a prior-cycle reference, not a confirmed 2026–27 amount.
To apply, create a MyVSAC account, open “Work with Grants,” choose “Apply for a Vermont Grant,” and also submit FAFSA each year. Depending on answers, the form may request information from the student, spouse or parents, including home value and debt. VSAC considers applications first-come, first-served while funding lasts. Do not wait until summer to ask when the application opens, what documents are needed or whether the file is complete. If you cannot complete FAFSA, VSAC notes a possible Vermont Grant Pathway alternative; ask directly whether it fits your situation.
The grant may be renewed for up to ten full-time semesters before a first bachelor’s degree, subject to annual rules and funding. Do not budget the maximum before receiving a written offer: recent UVM comments describe one family’s combination of Vermont Grant, UVM Promise and another scholarship, while other families ask why calculators do not show their final package. That does not guarantee awards stack or cover housing and meals. Compare the final offer, net cost and reduction rules for each award.
VSAC answers grant questions at grants@vsac.org and 800-882-4166 or 802-654-3750. Its resource center is at 10 East Allen Street, Winooski, VT 05404, open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; it is closed Monday and Friday. You do not need to visit to submit the online application. Prepare residency proof, institution, credit load and financial information, then ask VSAC and the college aid office for a written breakdown of eligibility, award and remaining balance.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
