Things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: kayaking, pools and a tropical garden

From paddleboarding and kayaking at Las Teresitas to César Manrique’s pools, the Palmetum and TEA contemporary art: four ways to experience Tenerife’s capital.

The city meets the water at Las Teresitas

Santa Cruz de Tenerife offers two different ways to spend a day in the water. Las Teresitas, about seven kilometres from the centre, is the municipality’s best-known beach: a bay sheltered by a breakwater, with golden sand and a family atmosphere. That protection makes swimming and gentle water sports possible, although wind and sea conditions still determine what can be done on any given day.

Anaga Experience brings kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling to the bay, with lessons for beginners and rentals arranged through the company. Visible reviews praise the instructors’ friendly guidance and explanations for first-time paddlers; one recent review recounts that an instructor advised postponing because of wind. That caution is part of a good outing: call ahead, confirm the meeting point and accept that the sea may change the plan. For visitors wanting more than time on the sand, the same company runs excursions in the Anaga massif, a landscape of ravines and trails within the municipality.

Poolside by the port: another way to swim

In Cabo Llanos, Parque Marítimo César Manrique trades the open shore for saltwater pools, waterfalls and a large sun terrace. The main pool has a ramp for gradual entry, and there are children’s areas; the complex makes it possible to swim and spend several hours without relying on waves. Recent reviews appreciate its scale and potential for a full day out, while noting that weekends can be busy and the café does not appeal to everyone.

For summer 2026 the venue listed a water-play castle, children’s games, kayaks, aqua-gym and workshops. That programme was labelled seasonal: the winter timetable took effect on September 7 and runs through June 2027. For a visit now, count on the pools and sun terrace and check which special activities remain on the calendar rather than assuming the water-play castle operates out of season. The complex also describes ramps, a lift, an amphibious chair and a pool hoist to assist access to the water.

From former landfill to a palm garden

A short walk away, the Palmetum has turned a former landfill into a 12-hectare botanical garden specialising in palms. The route passes through tropical and subtropical environments and opens onto views of the harbour and Atlantic; the garden describes its palm collection as the largest of its kind among tropical islands. The point is not to tick off a list of species but to walk slowly, pause at viewpoints and let the terrain become part of the visit.

Reviews mention pleasant paths, views and plant variety, though one notes dry areas. The official website says the garden is open year-round and offers guided visits that need to be requested in advance. Beside Parque Marítimo, it works as a quieter alternative or a complement: garden first, pool later, or the other way round depending on the heat and pace of the trip.

TEA: a cultural refuge in the centre

When it is time to trade sunshine for galleries, TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes brings contemporary art, cinema, workshops and family programmes together in the historic centre. MiniTEA is a free creative space for children; exhibition galleries are also free, and the cinema schedules Friday-to-Sunday screenings of original-language films and Canarian work. Its autumn 2026 calendar includes tours and activities; from October 3 it announces the group exhibition Mientras seamos salvajes, on view through January 2027.

Visitors mention the building, library and children’s area. In one stay, Santa Cruz lets travellers paddle in a sheltered bay, choose an urban pool if the sea is unsettled, walk a botanical garden born from environmental transformation and finish among art and cinema. Las Teresitas lies beyond the centre and depends on the weather; Parque Marítimo changes with the season, while the Palmetum and TEA offer two distinct land-based pauses.
