Things to do in San Cristóbal de La Laguna: city, Anaga and Bajamar

An itinerary linking the World Heritage historic centre, Anaga, the Museum of Science and the Cosmos and Bajamar’s natural pools.

La Laguna does not fit into a single postcard. In the historic centre, its grid of streets frames shops, squares and buildings that remain in everyday use; within the same municipality, the road climbs into Anaga’s damp forest and descends again to the Atlantic pools at Bajamar. The range of landscapes does not require an overfilled itinerary: choose two settings and let the journey between them become part of the visit.

Begin with a city made for walking

The historic centre, inscribed by UNESCO in 1999, preserves an urban plan that became a reference for later colonial cities in the Americas. Its character is best understood on foot: main streets, squares and houses from different centuries coexist with a living university and shopping city. The Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna offers a cultural visit with an audio guide; visitors who want to climb one of its towers need a separate ticket, with its own time slots and capacity. It is a chance to see the city from inside the church and, on the tower route, from above. Check the visit calendar before going: the cathedral’s official page and Google Maps listing showed different closing times when consulted.

From urban history, visitors can move to a different kind of experience at the Museum of Science and the Cosmos. Its exhibits are designed to be explored rather than viewed from a distance: interactive modules, a planetarium and the Microcosmos children’s room turn ideas from astronomy, physics and the human body into hands-on experiments. Recent Google Maps comments praise the entertaining format and helpful floor staff; families can move through the visit at their own pace. In 2026 the museum is hosting the temporary exhibition “Oler para creer” (“Smell to Believe”), announced through June 2027, alongside activities and planetarium sessions.

Anaga, with trail information before setting out

North of the historic centre, Anaga Rural Park changes the scale and the temperature. At Cruz del Carmen, the visitor centre introduces the protected area with a permanent exhibition and audiovisual presentation, and provides information on trails that start nearby. It is a useful place to choose a walk according to the weather, terrain and group’s experience instead of picking a route from a photograph alone. Visible Google Maps comments value the information and the scenery; they also note that parking can be difficult. Arriving early and asking about trail conditions helps visitors begin with context.

The Atlantic pools at Bajamar

La Laguna’s coast lies about 16 kilometres from the historic centre. At Bajamar, two large seawater pools and a children’s pool sit behind a breakwater; the complex has changing rooms, ramps and seasonal lifeguard service. Admission is free. The convenience of a swimming pool does not remove the ocean from the experience: tides and northern swell shape the day, and visitors should follow signs and staff instructions. Google Maps reviews describe a family-friendly swim, open views and the spectacle of the waves, while noting that parking fills at busy times.

A good way to experience San Cristóbal de La Laguna is to start in the historic centre and at the cathedral, visit the science museum with children, then reserve another day for Anaga or Bajamar. In clear weather, the route between city, mountain and coast shows why the municipality contains such different worlds. Every stop need not be a paid excursion: its trails, squares, public pools and museums offer distinct experiences, with official visitor information to check before setting out.
