OZ Museum opens that conversation on Lincoln Avenue. Its collection follows the world of L. Frank Baum from early books through cinema and stage interpretations, including The Wiz and Wicked. The museum describes more than two thousand objects from 1900 onward. That breadth gives readers, film enthusiasts and theatre audiences different ways into the same story. It also encourages a closer look at how adaptations change characters and settings that can initially seem fixed in popular memory.
The distinction between original material, commemorative objects and reproductions is part of reading the collection well. The ruby slippers identified by the museum were created by Jeffery Merrell for a fiftieth-anniversary commemoration; they are not presented here as Judy Garland’s filming shoes. Looking carefully at provenance makes the museum more interesting, because it reveals how the story has continued to generate objects and associations long after a particular screen version appeared.
The Columbian Theatre, Museum & Art Center brings a different relationship between art and place. Its rare paintings from Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair connect Wamego with a much larger cultural event, while its present programme keeps the building involved in community life. The Swogger Art Gallery adds changing exhibitions. A visit for paintings or a gallery display and an evening at a production are different experiences; checking access and performance dates gives each the attention it deserves.
For autumn 2026, the theatre publishes The Addams Family from October 16 to November 1 and Beetlejuice Jr. from November 6 to 8. Consult the individual sessions before booking. The announced date range does not mean there is a performance every day. Visitors requiring particular seating or hearing assistance can discuss the theatre’s published accessibility provisions with the box office.
Wamego Historical Society & Museum moves the narrative into the lives of residents. In City Park, Prairie Town Village gathers a cabin, jail, telephone exchange, general store and one-room school. The main museum building recreates the first city hall; it is a replica, while the village contains relocated historical structures. Nearby, the Dutch Mill recalls grain processing and the craftsmanship of its original 1879 construction north of town. The museum’s opening days change with the season, so plan indoor access separately from a walk through the park. Together, these places reveal a town that preserves stories, performs them and examines the work behind them.
