The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport interprets the Lower Cape Fear's maritime history. Since 2010, it has occupied former officers' quarters on the grounds of Fort Johnston. Exhibits connect communities with river and ocean through objects, navigation and archaeology; a periscope from USS Dolphin is among the interpretive features. Regular admission is free, and current opening is Tuesday through Saturday.
Neighboring institutions with different purposes
The Fort Johnston–Southport Museum and Visitor Center, in Garrison House, presents local history and provides information for continuing the visit. It is separate from the maritime museum, although both belong to the same historic setting. Garrison House is on East Bay Street; the maritime museum is on East Moore Street. Published institutional information differs over Sunday access, so confirm an interior visit planned for that day.
The Old Brunswick County Jail Museum changes both scale and subject. The 1904 brick jail preserves the relationship between the jailer's quarters and upstairs cells. Southport Historical Society has cared for it since 1984, and the building later served as a film location as well.
Opening is limited. The society publishes an April–October season with Wednesday and Saturday afternoon visits and additional Fridays during summer. For a Friday-to-Monday trip, protect the Saturday window rather than assuming every museum opens daily. This smaller visit complements the larger maritime story with a different kind of local history.
Choose the lighthouse experience before traveling
Oak Island Lighthouse is in Caswell Beach, outside Southport. Access to the grounds and a climb to the top are different experiences. The upper tour requires advance booking, a minimum age of nine and climbing 131 metal ship-ladder steps. Schedules change between warm and cool seasons and depend on guide availability.
A confirmed tour can anchor one day's outing while museum visits occupy their opening days. Climbing is not necessary to include the lighthouse in the trip, but an exterior visit should not be presented as equivalent to the upper tour.
Travelers using the Southport–Fort Fisher ferry should also understand a dated 2026 notice. NCDOT announced suspension September 12–15 for ramp repairs, with regular service expected back by September 16 at the latest. Those dates had passed by this edition's cutoff; the notice alone does not establish current operating status. Check the live service information before fixing that connection into the itinerary.
