Mohonk Preserve: begin with the right trailhead
Mohonk Preserve offers historic carriage roads and footpaths through a varied landscape. The Visitor Center in Gardiner is a useful orientation point, with free access to the building and immediate grounds. Farther access generally requires a day pass or membership. Mohonk Mountain House is a separate resort and is not a preserve trailhead.
The physical approach matters. East Trapps Connector, from the Visitor Center, uses a strenuous stone staircase; West Trapps provides a different approach toward Undercliff Carriage Road. For visitors with mobility needs, the preserve offers advance consultation and an all-terrain wheelchair loan under specified conditions. Choose a route from current maps and alerts rather than from a photograph of a distant viewpoint.
Minnewaska: let the season determine the activities
Minnewaska State Park Preserve combines lakes, waterfalls, cliffs and a large network of carriage roads and footpaths. Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center helps establish a manageable route, while the separate Sam's Point area needs its own access planning. Navigating to the correct sector prevents a substantial detour before the walk has even begun.
As reviewed in September 2026, the park states that swimming areas are closed until the 2027 season. Streams and waterfalls are not authorized swimming places. Autumn visits should therefore concentrate on walking and scenery. Parking capacity can cause temporary entry closures, and roadsides are not overflow lots. Seasonal closing times make it important to leave time for the return rather than only calculate the outward distance.
Huguenot Street: read the village beyond its façades
Historic Huguenot Street interprets Indigenous presence, Huguenot migration and the lives of free and enslaved inhabitants. Guided tours use selected buildings, including a replica Esopus Munsee wigwam and a reconstructed French church. The interpretation gives the attractive street a more complete history than a simple architectural stroll.
The 2026 schedule runs Wednesday through Sunday through October, then weekends in November, with final regular tours on December 13. Access limitations in historic buildings should be discussed ahead. Use the Broadhead Avenue parking lot and follow signs to the Visitor Center.
Transport deserves one final distinction. UCAT's actual 2026 Nature Bus timetable lists the last Ridge Route service on September 19, so it should not be promised for later autumn outings. Arrange the countryside journeys independently and leave the village visits and meals room to breathe between them.
