Mentone makes the most sense as a gateway to several Lookout Mountain landscapes, not as an itinerary where every attraction is next to the others. Separate the NPS preserve, the DeSoto Falls area and town stops. That lets you adjust to the day’s conditions and leave enough time for the drive.
Little River Canyon: follow the rim and choose overlooks
The NPS describes overlooks and waterfalls along Canyon Rim Parkway, trails toward the river and unpaved backcountry roads. Scenic areas are open from sunrise to sunset. The visitor center, operated with Jacksonville State University in Fort Payne, lists hours Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check alerts before choosing a trail or access point; temporary safety closures can change the plan.
DeSoto Falls: a separate outing from the park’s main area
The waterfall is about seven miles from the main DeSoto State Park area. Alabama State Parks lists a per-vehicle parking charge and provides a specific map. Pay attention to its navigation warning: the state advises against relying on GPS and directs larger vehicles and trailers to another route. This is not a walk from Mentone.
Mentone Arts Center: local culture on AL 117
After the drive and trails, the arts center provides cultural context for the town. Its gallery and shop feature regional makers, and the organization schedules classes, demonstrations and performances. Its current contact page lists hours 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Thursday through Sunday; it closes Tuesday and Wednesday. Check the calendar for a specific exhibition or event.
Do not link each stop as if they share a parking lot. Carry the official map, confirm closures and leave time for the return over mountain roads.
## An order that avoids unnecessary driving
Give the preserve’s scenic road its own outing and choose overlooks after checking official alerts; leave DeSoto Falls for a separate drive because it is apart from the park’s main area. The arts center can be a shorter town stop, but its weekly closures matter. Carry water and footwear suited to the trail you select, and do not treat a photograph or an old review as proof that access is open. Signs, current maps and manager notices take priority.
