At the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on the Bethany College campus, the starting point is an artist whose work has a permanent presence in the institution. The changing exhibitions add reasons to return or to choose particular travel dates. In autumn 2026, Look At Us Now gathers self-portraits by more than 140 artists and continues through October 18. The show offers a useful question to carry into the visit: how does an artist construct an image of a person, including the self? The gallery’s Monday closure belongs in the planning from the beginning.
Red Barn Studio Museum brings the scale closer to a single maker’s daily practice. Lester Raymer worked across painting, prints, ceramics, metal and other materials, often giving discarded objects another purpose. Guided visits help connect those objects with the studio and the life behind them. The active residency program keeps contemporary work in the picture. Rodger Gerberding is scheduled there from September 22 through October 9, 2026; his announcement invites visitors to see paintings in progress, subject to the practical availability of the artist.
The Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum changes the emphasis from individual creation to community history. Its roller mill speaks to the agricultural economy, while the Swedish Pavilion connects Lindsborg with the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Looking at both gives cultural identity a material setting: machinery, buildings and the effort of preserving them. A regular visit should not be confused with a special event that sets the mill machinery in motion. For autumn 2026, another distinction matters: from October 1 through the end of February, the museum adds Tuesday to its Sunday closure.
Coronado Heights opens the view outward. Northwest of town, the sandstone height overlooks the Smoky Hill River valley and contains trails, picnic facilities and a stone structure built by the WPA in 1936. Its castellated appearance can invite the wrong historical assumption. This is a twentieth-century public works structure; the association with Coronado is a local tradition rather than established evidence of the explorer’s presence on the hill.
Let weather and opening days determine the sequence. An outdoor visit may fit around the museums, while an exhibition or residency can justify giving art more attention. The point is to preserve enough flexibility to look closely. Lindsborg’s appeal becomes more legible when a painting, an industrial building and the valley are allowed to inform one another.
